  2. Starting your research • Places you may use • Google • Wikipedia • Help from your library • Databases (Embase, Medline, Lexi-Comp Online) • Print Books and E-books • Your Liaison Librarian • It’s not about where you search, it’s about what you search.

  3. Developing an Effective Search • Step 1: Write a sentence that summarizes your search topic. Pick the words from that sentence that are central to your search. • Using pegylatedinterferons for the treatment of hepatitis C. • PegylatedInterferons, Treatment, Hepatitis C

Developing an Effective Search • Step 2: Think of synonyms and related terms for the main concepts behind your search. • Treatment = Therapy, Treated, Treating, Treat* • The * denotes a truncation which tells the database the search for any ending after the word treat. This would include treatment, treated, and treating.

  5. Developing an Effective Search • Step 3: Find subject terms that relate to your search. Subject terms can come from MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) or LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings) or database specific subject headings. • pegylated interferon = peginterferon

  6. Developing an Effective Search • Step 4: Combine Subject Terms, synonyms, and original terms in a search using AND, OR, and NOT. • And, Or, and Not are called Boolean Operators. They are recognized by most databases and search engines as operator words to narrow or expand your search. • peginterferon and hepatitis C and treat*

  7. Developing an Effective Search • Step 5: Review results and refine search. • Adding search terms • Changing limiters • Combining Searches • If your search fails the first time, you can repeat steps 1-4 to try and get better results.
