History of Knoll AG • Dr. Albert Knoll and Hans Knoll founded Knoll AG in 1886 • Develops a cost effective way of producing codeine from morphine • In 1893, starts producing theobromine from cocoa bean shells • In 1895, developed Tanalbin, an antidiiarrhoeal; further made into Tannacomp, product still sold

History Continued • 1906- Launches Digipuratum • 1935- Minden facilities for production site of ephedrine • 1963- Launches world’s first calcium channel blocker, Isoptin • 1964- BASF AG acquires 15% ownership • 1971- Launches Iruxol, promotes wound healing • 1985- Knoll AG becomes fully owned by BASF

  5. Ephedrine • Used to treat respiratory tract disease and circulatory disorders • Ephedrine synthesis process developed as early as 1930 C10H15NO

  6. Isoptin • World’s first calcium channel blocker (1963) • Active substance: verapamil • Treats hypertension • Remains one of Knoll’s top selling products today

  7. Appetite suppresser • Active Ingredient: Sibutramine • Increases the activity of certain chemicals, norepinephrine and serotonin, in the brain

  8. Synthroid • Treats Thyroid disease • Active Ingredient: levothyroxine sodium • Replaces hormone that is usually made by normal thyroid glands

  9. New Innovations of Knoll • Reductil, treats obesity • Gopten & Tarka, manages hypertension • Zoleptil, treats schizophrenia
