  1. Thank you! Castilleja School Paul, Zvezda, Hugo

  2. Classroom Impact of Math Circles Theorem, proof, examples, exercises OR Question, exercises, conjecture, proof

  3. Purpose of contests • What people do before: practice materials! • Reach lots of students and their teachers • De-emphasize success under time pressure • MathCounts • Bad time pressure on the contest, but practice! • Problems that are accessible to students and… • Topical, useful in the classroom • Big audience!

  4. Workshop for teachers • http://www.castilleja.org/faculty/josh_zucker/gunn/ProblemSolvingWorkshop.html • Students and teachers need • “Getting dirty” • Patience • Organization • Special cases, generalization • Answer checking • Symmetry, invariants, and all that fancy stuff

  5. Example Problem for Teachers • Write three numbers in a row, chosen from 1 through 6. • Write the absolute value of the differences. • Write the absolute value of the difference. • Try to make the whole set contain one of each of the six numbers. • Great for teaching patience, but there’s some (but not too many!) shortcuts for people with insight. • Generalize! How many solutions? 1-10? 1-15?
