  2. Spread of Cities • City states grew prosperous from the surplus food produced on their farms. • Long distance trade, exchange the extra food and other goods for items they needed. • 2500 B.C. New cities were arising all over the Crescent. • Sumerians exchanged products and ideas, such as living in cities.

  3. Cultural Diffusion • The process of an idea or product spreading from one culture to another. • Sumerians would take on ideas and technologies that were more advanced than their own. • Other cultures adopted the Sumerian ways because it made life easier.

  4. Religion of many Gods • Believed that many different gods controlled the various forces in nature. • Polytheism: the belief in more than one god. • Enlil: god of storms and air; most powerful god. • Ugalla: protected humans from the evil demons who caused disease, misfortune, and misery.

  5. Sumerian Gods • Gods were immortal and all – powerful and humans were just the servants. • Keep the gods happy, Sumerians built impressive ziggurats for them and offered rich sacrifices. • Expected little help from the gods after death. • Believed that the souls of the dead went to the “land of no return”.
