Unit 1: Chemistry —Balancing Chemical Equations Academic Science A Ms. Philavane
Chemical Reaction • What are the reactants and products of this chemical reaction?
What is a chemical reaction? • When molecules/compounds combine together to make something new • Chemical equations represent chemical reactions • Reactant + Reactant Product • Example: H2 + O2 H2O
Why Balance Equations? • Law of Conservation of Matter • Matter cannot be created or destroyed • That means… • Whatever ingredients (types of atoms) you start with, you must also end up with no matter the form
Balance this… H2 + O2 H2O • Steps for Balancing Equations: • Start from the left and count the quantity of atoms for each element • Check to see if it’s balanced with the products • If it is, move on to the next element • If it is not, place a coefficient in front of the element or molecule to make it balanced on both sides of the arrow • Repeat the steps until all molecules/elements are balanced on both sides
Remember to take it one step at a time… H2 + O2 H2O H = H = O = O =
Rules to Remember • Subscripts cannot be changed - H2 • Only coefficients can be added - 2H2 • If no number is written, it is assumed to be “1”
More difficult equations • Find the elements which appear in the fewest numbers of molecules and balance these first. Leave H and O to balance last. __NaOH + __H2SO4 __Na2SO4 + __H2O
