  1. Alternative Energy Sources By: Brianna Shields March 3, 2005

  2. DO NOW • 1. Which type of fossil fuel is composed of compressed plant remains, and is found in a solid form? • 2. What type of pollution does the burning of fossil fuels cause? • 3. Which type of fossil fuel is also known as petroleum?

  3. GOAL • To be able to distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources

  4. Homework • What did you think of the “Drilling Paradise Dry” Article? • Should we drill for Oil in the Arctic Refuge?

  5. Activity • Work with your partner to come up with atleast 3 sources of energy besides fossil fuels

  6. Time to Teach • You will have 10-15 minutes to become an expert in one type of alternative energy source • How is that type of energy used? • Why is it beneficial (positives)? • What are the drawbacks (negatives)? • Is it currently used? • Draw a simple picture or symbol to represent the energy source

  7. Solar Energy WHAT IS IT? Light energy from the sun is collected and converted into heat and electricity BENEFITS Reduces fossil fuel use and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  8. Solar Energy DRAWBACKS On cloudy days or if solar cell gets blocked by sun CURRENT USES Calculators, heating Alternative Energy Sources

  9. Wind Energy WHAT IS IT? Sun creates air currents that blow against windmill blades BENEFITS Reduces use of fossil fuels and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  10. Wind Energy DRAWBACKS Doesn’t work on calm days Strong winds knock down mills Ugly CURRENT USES Wind farms out west for electricity Alternative Energy Sources

  11. Water Energy(hydro-electric power) WHAT IS IT? Running water in falls or dams turn electric turbine blades BENEFITS Reduces use of fossil fuels and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  12. Water Energy(hydro-electric power) DRAWBACKS Limited area to build dams Ruins fish migration Floods farm lands CURRENT USES Hoover Dam Niagara Falls Alternative Energy Sources

  13. Nuclear Energy WHAT IS IT? Atom’s nucleus splits releasing energy BENEFITS Reduces fossil fuel use and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  14. Nuclear Energy DRAWBACKS Expensive Unsafe (leaks, wastes, meltdown) Security Issue (terrorism) CURRENT USES Bombs Power plants Alternative Energy Sources

  15. Geothermal Energy WHAT IS IT? Energy produced by Earth’s insides Molten rock near surface creates hot spots BENEFITS Reduces fossil fuel use and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  16. Geothermal Energy DRAWBACKS ? CURRENT USES Geysers in Yellowstone National Park Alternative Energy Sources

  17. Tidal Energy WHAT IS IT? Areas with extreme low and high tides, use the difference to generate electricity BENEFITS Reduces fossil fuel use and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  18. Tidal Energy DRAWBACKS Limited areas for use CURRENT USES ? Alternative Energy Sources

  19. Hydrogen Energy WHAT IS IT? Hydrogen removed from water and burned BENEFITS Reduces fossil fuel use and pollution Alternative Energy Sources

  20. Hydrogen Energy DRAWBACKS No way to remove Hydrogen from water without using fossil fuels CURRENT USES Hybrid Cars Alternative Energy Sources

  21. Burning Biomass WHAT IS IT? Burning material that comes from living things Wood, corn husk, sugar cane, sunflower, seaweed, animal waste, garbage Alternative Energy Sources

  22. Burning Biomass BENEFITS Reduces fossil fuel use and pollution Uses renewable resources Cuts down on wasted biomass Alternative Energy Sources

  23. Burning Biomass DRAWBACKS Burning still produces some air pollution CURRENT USES Wood stoves Country homes may burn garbage Alternative Energy Sources

  24. PAMPHLET PROJECT • Use the remainder of the period to work on your pamphlet project with your group
