  1. Nature of Science Card GameAnexercise Introducing people to differing ideas about the nature and reach of Science. A good Ice-breaker when starting a class.Cards describing a variety of views regarding scientists and howscience works: http://webspace.oise.utoronto.ca/~benczela/NofSCardExchange.pdf Phase 1: • 1. I (the instructor) will give each of you a randomly drawn set of 5 cards. • 2. Evaluate your cards according to what you can most affirm and least affirm (i.e., agree with). • 3. Move around the classroom and examine each other’s statements and make trades. The goal is to improve one’s hand by trading cards one for one, i.e., your goal is to trade cards you like less for ones you like more. There is no discarding!!!

  2. Phase 2: 1. Again move about the classroom, but this time look for someone with whom you can pair. 2. The pairing rules are that each pair must hold eight cards on which they have relative agreement. Each member of a pair must contribute at least three cards The pair’s remaining two cards are discarded

  3. Phase 3: • Once again move about the classroom, but now pairs will form quadruplets. 2. Each foursome is to hold eight cards with each pair contributing at least three cards. 3. Once the foursome has been established, rank-order your cards. 4. Your group can discard (if you want) the two bottomed-ranked cards.

  4. Theoretical emphasis (TE): science is primarily a rationalistic, theory-driven endeavor. • Empirical emphasis (EE): science is primarily a data gathering experimental endeavor in pursuit of physical evidence. • Anti-science view (AS): science is overrated. One should not give much credence to the aims, methods, or results of science. • Scientism (S): science is the way of knowing; it is the perfect discipline. • Cultural view (CV): science is embedded in a social, historical, and psychological context which affects all that goes on in science. • Balanced view (BV): science is a complicated affair that cannot easily be reduced to one or even a few simple descriptions.
