  2. Project Background • Commenced August 2007 • Initiated by Barts and The London NHS Trust • Supported and funded by NHS Connecting for Health

Project Objectives • To map the key flows of patient information across the Trust and provide documented flow maps • To develop a data mapping tool & supplementary guidance that would integrate with the Information Governance Toolkit and help the wider NHS community to assess and improve compliance on a number of IGT requirements.

Phase 1 - Scope Patient identifiable information • Contains person name and/or other items of data that could identify a person Key areas of the Trust • Those most likely to deal with frequent or high volume transfers of patient information Routine flows • Between departments or in/out of organisation Timescale • 3 months

  5. Original scope: Email Fax Post/Courier – hard-copy or electronic media Text Message Additional scope: Carried by hand – e.g. USB stick, laptop Automated system transfers Uploads to a system Delivery methods

  14. Mapping problems • No such thing as a 100% accurate information map! • Different people do things differently • Not always possible to generalise about how a particular information item flows • e.g. faxing to a GP

  15. Update on tool • National user group set up • To discuss system enhancements • To decide how to calculate the risk associated with data flows • To discuss requirements for the GP information mapping process
