  1. BraveNew WorldAldous Huxley Chapter XI

  2. Chapter Commentary/Analysis • Director resignation • People want to see John, but not Linda • Linda takes soma, while John refuses • Bernard, the accredited guardian of John • Introduction to Death Conditioning • The Feelies • John refuses to have sex with Lenina

  3. Themes Individuality • John is an individual in the new society. He doesn’t believe that “everyone belongs to everyone else”, and he doesn’t conform with society. • Bernard is still an individual, but just considers himself more important than before, as he is now recognised as the guardian of the Savage. • Lenina opposes the theme of individuality, as she struggles to understand John’s behaviour, and is a prime example the standard conditioned World State citizen.

  4. Themes Control • The citizens of the World State express this theme, in not wanting to see Linda – a mother. “m------” “that was past a joke” • Linda is conditioned to want and needsoma, using alcohol as a substitute when she doesn’t have access to soma, where as John won’t stand for it. • Death conditioning is the World State controlling children as they grow up. John, as he grew up outside of the “Other Place”, hasn’t been conditioned, and therefore his character doesn’t apply to this theme.

  5. Characterisation • Bernard – changes from an outsider to someone who is recognised, and who is important. “he was behaving as though, at the very least, he were a visiting World Controller”. • John – this is the first chapter he is out of the the Reservation. He is famous, in a way, but he doesn’t conform with society, and their conformities. “I don’t think you ought to see things like that… Like this horrible film.”. • Lenina – takes a liking towards John, but doesn’t receive the same liking back. Doesn’t understand why John won’t have sex with her. Just as she referred to Bernard earlier, she refers to John as “queer”. “Why was he so queer? Why did he go out of his way to spoil things?”.
