  2. Main Concept(s) • If it flies…it’s not human • Birds, bats, insects, squirrels, fish (sail briefly) • Airplanes, helicopters, blimps, autogiros • Earthbound • FLIGHT IS FREEDOM

  3. What Does Flight Mean? • Humans oppose laws that are unfair and/or inhibiting • Gravity = limitations • Helps to broaden the imagination: possibilities

  4. Who is Given Flight? • Angels • Superheroes • Worshipped figures • Witches • Mythical creatures • Etc. (Figures that tend to be highly fantasized)

  5. What Does Flight Show? • Highly symbolic: • Freedom, love, spirituality, miracles… • “Taking wings” • “Burdens that tie us down” • Premature-ending flights = bad • Falling from significant heights and surviving

  6. Irony Trumps Everything • Flight can be a burden • Ex. Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus (1984) • Flying = imprisonment • Alienation from society • Other ironic examples: • Franz Kafka’s “A Hunger Artist” (1922) • Gabriel Garcia Marque’s “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” (1968) • Thrilled at flying, feared at falling
