Plot Components • Exposition:the beginning of a novel or short story; introduction including the ‘hook’; sets the scene • Rising Action:the events of the plot; conflict, characters, and suspense are developed • Climax: the turning point of the story; the point at which the reader knows how the protagonist will end up; the moment of ‘exhale’ • Falling Action: the events occurring from the time of the climax to the end of the story • Resolution/Denouement: the storyline ends; a sense of closure is achieved
