Rubrics • Thoroughly develops all aspects of the task • Logical and clear plan of organization • Introduction and a conclusion that are beyond a restatement of the theme • Ample historical evidence to substantiate thesis • Richly supports the theme with relevant facts, examples, and details • Clear, analytical, and comprehensive thesis • More analytical than descriptive • Analyzes, evaluates, and/or creates information • Uses comparisons, chronology, causation, connections, themes, interactions • Relates to larger global context.

The Process Step One: Recall • Prewriting or Brainstorming • Identify relevant historical context • Names, dates, vocabulary What does this look like? • Extract information from notes, reading, research • Create a list • Give examples If you stop here, you have simply summarized – this will earn nothing more than a B-

The Process Step Two: Analysis • Look for connections • Compare and contrast • Cause and effect • Chronology (change-over-time) What does this look like? • Categorize • Make assumptions/draw conclusions about the groups • Give value to groups (which events/details are most significant) This is a good essay, and might be awarded an A – this year, but not in higher level classes

The Process Step Three: Synthesis • Develop a thesis • Plan an ‘attack’ – organization • Relate to larger global context What does this look like? • Answer the Question!!! • Identify the ‘common thread’ • Offer an opinion or value • Utilize your groups from step 2 This is what a great essay looks like!!!

Specifically, the river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates, as well as the Nile gave rise to the world’s first civilizations. Discuss the major similarities and differences between these two civilizations with regard to technological innovation.
