  1. WCSD Teacher Performance Standards Examining and Evaluating Standard One: Planning and Preparation

  2. Purpose • OUTCOME – TIF Pilot Administrators will have increased acuity and skill in assessing the Components of Standard One

  3. Agenda • Review the Components of Standard One, focusing on ways to see evidence of Effective and Highly Effective performance • Become Familiar with the critical attributes and examples of the Components and Elements • Examine samples of teachers’ written lesson designs, collect evidence of critical attributes • Compare notes, evidence; dialogue • Share insights, challenges and questions

  4. Standard 1- Planning and Preparation Standard 1describes the critical, behind-the-scenes work of organizing for classroom instruction. Teachers spend considerable time and effort transforming the established curriculum, so that it becomes accessible for each of their students. That effort includes having a deep knowledge of the content and designing instruction that is appropriate to the diverse learners in that teacher’s charge. To ensure that all students reach the learning outcomes, teachers have clear criteria for determining success, and plan both formative and summative assessments. 4

  5. Components: 1A: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy 1B: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students 1C: Setting Instructional Outcomes 1D: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources 1E: Designing Coherent Instruction 1F: Designing Student Assessment Standard 1: Planning and Preparation

  6. Assessing Comfort Levels • Using the rubric page for your assigned Component, read for detail • Work with your team to sort your Comforts/Challenges into a “T” chart • Be ready to share…

  7. Critical Attributes and Examples • Now…take a look at the supportive document for your assigned Component. • With your small group, describe how using the attributes and examples will help you observe and analyze evidence, confer with teachers about their present level of performance and steps they will take to grow in their planning processes. • Discuss ways you will share this document with your teachers.

  8. Analyzing an actual lesson plan • With your small group, scan sample(s) of actual written lesson plans • Comparing the sample with what you know about the critical attributes of your assigned Component, what do you see evidence of? • What are some attributes that are missing? What would you need to ask the teacher before the observation?

  9. Time permitting… • Take a look at any lesson plans you may have brought • With your team, dialogue about what you are noticing in those artifacts

  10. Home Play (not homework) • PRACTICE examining the attributes of Standard One with an actual lesson plan from a teacher at your site • Conduct a Pre-conference with one of your teachers, practicing probing for specificity on the Components of Standard One. • Come prepared to describe your experience, and what you are noticing about the connection between mediocre instruction and poorly articulated planning.

  11. Insights and Take-Aways • What are some of your ah-hah’s from today’s session? • What do you need to spend more time on to become an expert in Standard One?
