  2. God Provoked with Philistines Because of The Ark

  3. 1 Samuel 5:1-2 The Ark was captured 30 miles west of Jerusalem to Ashdod, one of the Philistines 5 cities. They took the ark into the pagan temple of Dagon and set it beside him. Dagon – god of agriculture

  4. 1 Samuel 5:3-5 A Stumpy Situation The next morning Dagon was found fallen over in front of the ark. In other words, Dagon was caught bowing down before the presence of God. God proved how helpless the idol was and that it had to be set back in place. The next morning the idol was found mutilated, his head and hands were broken off or cut off and laid by the door. The torso of the idol was found laying in front of the ark. Neither the priests of Dagon nor any of its worshippers dared to enter the temple, the dreaded fear of the Lord.

  5. 1 Samuel 5:6-7 • Because the ark represented the presence of God, the Lord’s hand was heavy against the Philistines of Ashdod. God himself afflicted them with plagues for their folly. He destroyed them and vexed them with boils, abscesses, swellings and tumors.

  6. Continued… • God inflicted so much injury that the men referred to the ark as the Ark of the God of Israel and decided that it could no longer dwell in their midst. They realized that they could not fight against Jehovah Gibbon, a true man of war. They could not endure his chastisement, it was too heavy for them and upon their god, the stubby & stumpy Dagon.

  7. 1 Samuel 5:8-9 The five council rulers of the Philistines convened to discuss what to do with the ark of the God of Israel, they decided to have the ark transported to Gath. As the ark, the presence of God entered Gath, so did the wrath of God. The Lord destroyed the city with tumors, both the young and the old.

  8. 1 Samuel 5:10-12 • The Philistine rulers decided next to send the ark to Ekron, hoping to spare the city of Gath. But before the ark of the Lord entered into the city of Ekron, they cried out for their life, fearing they would be killed. They called for the rulers and insisted the ark be returned to its own place before it utterly destroys them. Before the decision could be reached, the spirit of death had already destroyed many in the city.

  9. Question…. What should occur to the enemy when he attempts to bind or capture you?

  10. Continued… The Ekronites soon reached that the wrath of God followed the ark. They insisted the ark be returned to its own place, send it it’s own place, they consented. The wrath of God dispatched a deadly destruction upon the city, those who survived were smitten with tumors and their cries reached unto the Heaven.

  11. 1 Samuel 6 • The ark of the Lord had been in Philistine possession for seven months. God completed his reign of tyranny and terror. The rulers devised a plan to return the ark. The priests and the fortune tellers (religious & familiar spirits) were summoned as an advisory council to aid then in making a decision. They needed to know what to do and how to return the ark without risking additional lives. The advisory council instructed the Philistine rulers to not return the ark of the Lord empty. They suggested sending a a trespass offering (sin offering) as a means of a ransom. Ancient pagan culture utilized money as a means to avoid divine punishment…

  12. Cont’d. ….or judgment. The Lord himself became a ransom for us, redeeming us from the hand of the enemy.

  13. 1 Samuel 6:4-5 • The rulers inquired as to what the trespass offering should be. The advisory council determined that they should make golden images of the tumors and the rats which were destroying their country, one for each ruler because the plagues were intended to strike them. They were advised to make golden models and pay honor to Israel’s God and perhaps He, in turn, would lift his wrath from you, your idols, and your land.

  14. 1 Samuel 6: 6 • The advisory council called them into remembrance of how the Lord bought terrible judgment against Egypt on behalf of Israel when Pharaoh & Egypt hardened their hearts. “Don’t harden your hearts, rulers”. The people were ultimately released and departed out of Egypt’s grip. The council gave respect to the God of Israel and knew the rulers were dealing with a formidable foe. They were well versed in the actions the Lord performed against Israel on behalf of his children.

  15. 1 Samuel 6:7-11 • The advisory council told the rulers to make a new cart and tie two milk cows who have never been bound and lay the ark of the Lord upon the cart. Put the gold jewelry as the trespass offering in the cart in a box ‘coffer’ and send it away. The rulers suggested that if the cows follow their calves back home, which is by natural instinct, then the events which occurred were by coincidence. If they continue to take the ark home through the coast of Beth – Shemesh, then the Lord is responsible for the disaster.

  16. 1 Samuel 6:12 • The men followed the instructions and the cows went straight along the highway, not turning to the right or the left. The Philistine rulers followed them along the border. • If a cow can be led of the Holy Spirit, what about us?

  17. 1 Samuel 6:13 • The Israelites of Beth-Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley. They lifted up their eyes and rejoiced as they saw the ark returning to them.

  18. 1 Samuel 6:14 • The Ark stopped abruptly at a great stone in a field belonging to a Beth- shemite named Joshua. They chopped the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering unto the Lord.

  19. 1 Samuel 6:15 • The Levites took down the cart and the chest of jewels with it. They placed the gold on the stone, offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices in the same day to the Lord.

  20. 1 Samuel 6:16 • The Lord used this scenario to illustrate His will in restoring His people to Himself. He used the Levites to make sacrifices to Him that the people may come near unto him. The rulers saw this and returned to Ekron.

  21. 1 Samuel 6:17-18 • The Philistines sent 5 gold tumors as trespass or sin offerings, one for Ashdod, Gaca, Ashkelon, Gath, Ekron and 5 gold rats. The large stone belonging to the field of Joshua, which they set the ark of the Lord, is presently there in Beth-Shemesh.

  22. 1 Samuel 6:19-21 • God struck 70 men of Beth- Shemesh because they looked into the Ark of the Lord. The purpose of the ark was to influence the people with the holiness of God – a mystery. Curiosity was not permitted. No spectators only participators. (How does God view Spectators?) The people mourned because the wrath of God was inflicted upon them. They reasoned among themselves concerning who could stand in the presence of the Lord. Where do we send the ark from here? They sent messengers to Kirjath – jearim that the Philistines have returned the ark and they needed to come get it Kirjath -jearim is a suburb in Judah – praise the presence of God belongs in praise.

  23. Chapter 7 • The men of Kirjath – jearim came for the ark and took it to Abinadab’s house, the son of Eleazar, to guard the ark. Although Eleazar is the priest, Samuel is the real leader. The people of Israel needed revival, they needed someone in spiritual authority who could return the hearts to the Lord. (Pastors after his heart.) There was a deep depression in Shiloh after the death of Eli & his sons. Eleazar was priest but Samuel was the man of God for the season of restoration. For twenty years the people cried out to the Lord for deliverance from the Philistines.

  24. 1 Samuel 7:3-4 • The cries unto the Lord for deliverance provoked a response from Heaven. The word of he Lord stirred up in Samuel to reveal to them what their hindrance to deliverance was. They were crying out to the Lord but they had not returned to the Lord. Samuel was released by the Holy Spirit to function as priest, military leader, judge, king and prophet. He instructs them to rid themselves of idols & strange gods. He prophesies that if they return to the Lord whole heartedly, commit yourself & serve him, he will deliver them out of the hand of the Philistines. The Israelites put away their idols & served the Lord only.

  25. Questions • How do you get a response from Heaven? • Why haven't we received complete deliverance in every area of our lives?

  26. 1 Samuel 6:5-6 Samuel called a holy convocation, a solemn assembly to gather at Mizpeh (watchtower) where he would intercede for them there.

  27. Cont’d. The Israelites gathered together to Mizpeh and presented a drink offering to the Lord as s symbol of the pouring out of their hearts before the Lord. The people fasted & repented unto Him. Samuel functioned as judge and leader to Israel while in Mizpeh.

  28. 1 Samuel 6:7-8 • When the Philistines heard about the holy convocation in Mizpeh, the rulers went up against Israel. When Israel heard about what the Philistines were doing, they were overcome with fear. They entreated Samuel to pray incessantly for their breakthrough and their deliverance. They needed the Lord to save them from their enemies
