  2. Action Verbs • An action verb is a word that tells what people or things do • The verb is always in the predicate • Ex. Scott / lifted the heavy box.

  3. Main Verbs and Helping Verbs • A verb may be more than one word • The main verb is the most important verb • The helping verb comes before the main verb • Ex. I amgoing to the store. hv mv

  4. Helping Verbs • Some common helping verbs

  5. A being verb shows that someone or something is Being verbs do not express any actions Example: Sean is an athlete. Being Verbs

  6. Common Being Verbs • Here are examples of common being verbs: am, was, has been, will be, is, were, have been, shall be, are, had been

  7. Present, Past, and Future • The tense of the verb lets you know whether something happens in the present, past or in the future.

  9. Irregular Verbs • There are three forms of verbs: present, past, and past participle • The past participle is the form of the verb used with has, have had or will have • An irregular verb does not form the past tense by adding –ed

  11. Linking Verbs • A linking verb is a being verb • A linking verb does NOT show an action • A linking verb “links” the subject to a noun, pronoun, or adjective.
