  2. The Mission of the High School Office: Every DPS student will graduate prepared for college, career, and life:Enlisted, Employed, or Enrolled!

  3. *Durham School of the Arts- 24 credits required

  4. Freshmen Course Selection 1. English I (Academic, Honors) 2. World History (Academic, Honors) 3. Mathematics: Common Core Math I (semester or year-long) or Common Core Math II for students who took Common Core Math I in middle school. 4. Science A. Earth Science (Academic, Honors) B. Biology (Honors) 5. Healthful Living 6. Elective or 2nd Credit Math Option 7. Elective 8. Elective (if on a 4 x 4 or A/B schedule).

  5. Making Course Selections • Complete a Four-Year Plan • Consider Future Goals • Primary & Alternate Course Selections are Equally Important • Review Teacher Recommendations and Ask Questions

  6. Future Ready Core Versus Minimum Course Requirements for UNC School Admission FRC and MCR do not have the same requirements. Please research the college / university of interest to determine individual school minimum requirements.

Subject Testing with High Schools • Required as an End-of-Course test: Common Core Math I; English II; and Biology. • Required as NC Final Exams: Math II; Math III; AFM, Pre-Calculus; Discrete Math; English I; III; IV; World History; Civics; US History I & II; Earth Science; Physical Science; Chemistry; and, Physics.

High School Success • Create a Solid Schedule Considering Future Goals • Attend After School tutorials and Saturday programs • Student(s) & Parent(s) Communicate with Teachers Regularly • Complete & Turn In All Assignments • Get Involved In Extracurricular Activities • Attend Evening Events • Visit District and School Website Often • Advance Placement courses typically are available to students beginning in the sophomore year.

Hillside New Tech • Hillside New Tech High School promises to effectively engage students in preparing for careers in engineering by using project-based learning with technology embedded in the projects.   28. Holton Career and Resource Center • Students take traditional courses at their base high school and then advanced career/technical courses at Holton. • Areas of study include: Cosmetology, Barbering, Construction, Engineering, Public Safety, Robotics, etc.

  29. Magnet Lottery Program Timeline • Application Period: January 13 – January 31, 2014 • Applications for program and calendar magnet schools must be submitted online at www.dpsnc.net • Applications for Pathway Cluster Programs must be submitted online by www.dpsnc.net

  30. Application Process • For Hillside New Tech, JDC Early College, and City of Medicine Academy, applications are two-fold. • Applicant must submit the online student data form, and then submit the hard copy application to the small high school.

  31. Computer Access is Available • Durham Libraries: 8 locations across the county • Durham Housing Authority: access is available at community centers • DPS Staff Development Center, 2107 Hillandale Rd: January 18 & 25 from 9 – 1. • DPS Magnet Schools (use during operating hours).

  32. Magnet Process • Lotteries conducted in late February • Lottery notification letters are mailed out on March 1, 2014, through U.S. Postal Service • Must register by March 21, 2014, at the assigned school.
