School Shootings. By E ric Cantu. Why do Shootings Occur?. They want to get back at those who hurt the. Other kids pick on them or bully them. They don’t value life. They have mental problems. Lack of counseling or moral support. They are victims of physical or mental abuse.

  2. Why do Shootings Occur? • They want to get back at those who hurt the. • Other kids pick on them or bully them. • They don’t value life. • They have mental problems. • Lack of counseling or moral support. • They are victims of physical or mental abuse.

Columbine School Shooting • Occurred April 20, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado. • Two high school seniors Dylan and Klebold and Eric Harris enacted an assault. • Harris and Klebold left journals, notes , and video as evidence. • They had no targets, they wanted to kill as many students as they can before committing suicide. • They prepared pipe bombs, and detonated them in the cafeteria and shot students at point blank. • 13 casualties

Sandy Hook Shooting • Occurred on December 14,2012. • Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adults. • Lanza’s motive was hate. • He went to the elementary wearing black clothes and a military vest. • He had semi automatic weapons. • Lanza acted alone, and it prompted renewed debate over gun control.

  5. UT Clock Tower Shooting • Occurred August 1, 1966. • After killing his wife and mother Charles Whitman started shooting in the observation deck of the University of Texas at Austin. • He killed 15 and wounded 32. • Shot dead by police. • Whitman motive was hate.

  6. Are school Shootings Increasing? • YES! • 30 shootings have occurred around the nation since the massacre of Sandy Hook.

  7. How to Prevent a Shooting • Take consideration of students around you. • School should enforce counseling. • More police around campus. • Background checks on teacher and principals. • Renew gun control policy. • Be aware of lockdown procedure.

  8. Recommendations during a shooting • Determine if you should hide and barricade yourself. • Turn off the lights. • Listen to any school warnings. • Call 9-1-1. • Try to stay calm. • Consider playing dead if you can’t hide yourself.
