On January 30, 1968, during celebrations for the Vietnamese New Year (Tet), North Vietnam and the Vietcong launched a massive attack on South Vietnam • Occurred during a week-long truce that had been proclaimed for the holiday • 100 towns, 12 U.S. air bases, and the U.S. embassy in Saigon were attacked • The attack was repulsed and was a military victory for the US and its ally • 32,000 Vietcong fighters died, compared to 3,000 US and ARVN soldiers • The ability and willingness of the North Vietnamese and Vietcong to make an attack like the Tet Offensive convinced many Americans that the war would end in a stalemate • Before the Tet Offensive, 28% of Americans called themselves doves (people opposed to the war) while 56% called themselves hawks (people in support of the war) • After Tet, 40% of Americans were doves and 40% were hawks
