  1. Paris Peace Conference Simulation Game

  2. Objective • You will be part of a delegation (team) representing one of three countries (England, France, US) at the Paris Peace Conference. • You will decide on what you think is best for your country and what you hope to achieve. • You will attempt to negotiate a settlement in your favor.

  3. Directions • 1)Meet with your group. Read your character and your goals/objectives • 2)decide (for each category) what is your best outcome and what is your worst outcome. • 3)negotiate with other powers to achieve your goals/aims (5-10 minutes) and vote. • Score the results

  4. Issue #1: What should happen to colonies of defeated nations? • Option 1: Free to govern themselves • Option 2: Divided among the victors of WWI • Option 3: Run by the League of Nations

  5. Issue #2: What should happen to Alsace-Lorraine? • Option 1: Germany gets it • Option 2: France gets it • Option 3: Controlled by the League of Nations

  6. Issue #3: What should happen to the Saar (valuable region in Germany)? • Option 1: Germany gets to keep it • Option 2: France gets control for 15 years to help pay for damages • Option 3: France gets it forever

  7. Issue #4: What should happen to the Czechoslovakia (region of former A-H)? • Option 1: Become an independent country • Option 2: The League of Nations controls it • Option 3: Austria gets control over it.

  8. Issue #5: Who gets blamed for the war? • Option 1: Germany • Option 2: Everyone • Option 3: No one

  9. Issue #6: Should Germany pay reparations? • Option 1: Yes, 700,000,000 to be split among the allies • Option 2: Yes, 100,000,000 to be split among the allies • Option 3: No

  10. Issue #7: What should happen to the German armed forces? • Option 1: Restricted to pre-war levels (which is more than options 2 and 3). • Option 2: Only allow standing army of 250,000 men, 40 battleships, 10 u-boats, and 90 planes. • Option 3: Only allow standing army of 100,000 men, 6 battleships. No u-boats or planes!

  11. Issue #8: Should we have freedom of the seas (no protected/restricted areas)? • Option 1: Yes, we must be allowed access to everywhere in the world • Option 2: No, we must protect our trade routes/investments around the world.

  12. Issue #9: Should we have a global arms (weapons) reduction? • Option 1: Yes, we have too much militarism going on. Reduce weapon stockpiles immediately. • Option 2: No, we must protect our trade routes/investments around the world. • Option 3: Only those who lost WWI need to reduce arms to avoid future problems.

  13. Issue #10: Should we create the League of Nations? • Option 1: Yes, we need to talk more. • Option 2: No, we only need to worry about our own countries.

  14. Who is victorious? • Was everyone happy? • Does this really resolve postwar problems? • Could this lead to future conflict?

  15. The Treaty of Versailles • World leaders agreed to create the League of Nations -Wilson insists that this must be done. • Wilson runs into problems here at home -his victory on the league of nations is not a lock • US Senators refuse to ratify the treaty -irreconcilables (strong isolationists) -reservationists (0pposed treaty for certain articles, i.e...worried about declaring war) • The League of Nations is still created by other countries -has little power and is not effective
