  2. Biography of Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens commonly known as Mark Twain. Born on November 30th,1835 in the village of Florida Missouri. Halley’s comet was visible at his birth. He was the fifth surviving child of John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemons. His father died of pneumonia in 1847 when Samuel was 14. Samuel was then sent away from home to become a printers apprentice. Samuel then left home as a young man to become a traveler for the rest of his life.

  3. Bio Continued • After working as a Riverboat Pilot and spending some time in the south where he was a Confederate soldier for two weeks. He then moved to the developing American West. Samuel got married Olivia Langdon in 1870. They had four children together: Langdon who died as an infant; Susy who died in her twenty's; Jean who died from heart failure; Clara their only surviving daughter.

  4. Bio continued • Olivia L. Langdon died on June 7, 1870. Samuel Clemens died on April 21, 1910. Their Daughter Clara lived to be 88. She had one daughter who died without having any children so there are know direct descendants of Samuel Clemens living. He wrote 28 books, numerous short stories, letters, and sketches.

  5. Author’s Voice in Tom Sawyer • Mark Twain writes in a very southern voice during the book Tom Sawyer. The words that some of his character are poorly annunciated or just not that complex. • He used many popular slang words that were used during the region and time period, such as old scratch that meant the devil or caitiff that means cowardly or wretched.

  6. Authors voice in Tom Sawyer Continued. • Tom Sawyer is written in a third-person limited point of view so that you know what is going on but only from one characters perspective.

Author’s purpose • At the beginning of the book mark twain states that “this book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls” • he also says that “ I hope it will not be shunned by men and women on that account, for part of my plan has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves.” • So I think that his purpose was mainly to entertain but also to help people remember the good times of their childhood and what it’s like to be a kid.

  8. Imagery • Tom sawyer imagery. • Imagery is an literary device. Its when an author uses an objects that aren't there • It helps the reader visualize what is happening in the story.

Example from the book • An example of imagery from the book is. “In an instant both boys were rolling and tumbling in the dirt, gripped together like cats; and for the space of a minute they tugged and tore at each other’s hair and clothes, punched and scratched each other’s noses, and covered themselves with dust and glory.”
