  4. I. Ruth, the Moabitess, Comes to Israel A. Elimelech & Naomi go to Moab – 1:1-5 1-2, Elimelech & Naomi from tribe of Judah 2, They should not have gone to Moab - Dt. 28:1f cf. 28:15f 4, Taking Moabite wives violated - Deut. 7:1-3 5, The curses came upon them – Deut. 7:4; 28:58-62

Ruth Remains with Naomi – 1:6-18 6 Naomi decides to return to Judah 8-13, Naomi could not provide for daughters-in-law, so she tells them to return to their people 14, Orpah leaves, but Ruth clung to Naomi 16-17, Ruth saw something in Naomi that she wanted – to change to her people & her God

  7. I. Ruth, the Moabitess, Comes to Israel C. Ruth Returns with Naomi – 1:19-22 20, Naomi = “pleasant.” Mara = “bitter” God had dealt with them according to His promises. Disobedience does not bring His blessing. 22, Barley is the first of the small grains harvested – it is early Spring

  8. II. Ruth gleans in Boaz' Field A. Boaz meets Ruth (2:1-7) 1 - Boaz is a kinsman of Elimelech – a cousin? 2 - Gleaning is how the poor survived – Lev. 19:9-10 3 - God’s providence for Ruth to be in Boaz’ field 5 – Boaz notices Ruth 7 – Ruth is courteous and she worked hard

  9. II. Ruth gleans in Boaz' Field B. Boaz Protects Ruth (2:8-13) 8-9 – Boaz instructs Ruth to stay in his fields as protection & provision 10 – Ruth is humble 11 – Ruth’s reputation preceded her 13 – Ruth recognized her disadvantage as a Moabitess

Boaz Provides for Ruth (2:14-23) 14 – Boaz provides her food and grain 15-16 – Boaz provides her grain to glean 17-19 – Ruth gives grain to Naomi and tells her what happened that day 20-22 – Naomi recognizes the Lord's gracious hand 23 – Ruth follows Naomi’s instructions

Boaz Agrees to Redeem Ruth (3:10-18) 10 – Boaz recognizes Ruth is seeking to do things God’s way instead of what may have been her own desires 11-13 – Boaz proves to be an upright man who will do what is right for Ruth 14-17 – Boaz is gracious to Ruth & Naomi 18 – Boaz also has a good reputation

Boaz Redeems and Marries Ruth (4:1-12) 1-4 – Boaz follows the law’s or redemption seeking out the closer relative first 3 – “Brother” – could be brother or cousin 5-6 – Laws of redemption include raising up offspring in dead brother’s name – Lev. 25:25; Deut. 25-5-6

Boaz Redeems and Marries Ruth (4:1-12) 7 – The redemption is made legal by custom of giving of his sandal 8-10 – Ruth becomes Boaz' wife to raise up offspring to Mahlon's name 11-12 – The people give a blessing on Boaz and Ruth

The Birth of Obed (4:13-17) 13 – The Lord is gracious to give her a son 14-16 – The women bless Naomi recognizing the Lord’s graciousness 17 - Obed is raised up to the name of Elimelech's family (“son has been born to Naomi”)
