A female tribute and a male tribute were chosen in each district to compete against other players in the competition. • B. Historical: payment made periodically by one state or ruler to another as a sign of dependence. • Ex. The ruler in control of the area received a tribute of a trunk of gold coins from the neighboring ruler.

In The Hunger Games, districts are made to give up two young people to participate in a competition to the death to show repentance for their previous rebellion against the Capitol. Ex. The boy showed repentance for forgetting to feed the dog by promising to give the dog extra food at every meal and taking it for extra walks.
