  1. Layers of Earth

  2. Crust • The outer most layer of Earth • Made of Oxygen, silicon and aluminum

  3. Oceanic Crust • Made of basalt • Younger, more dense, thinner

  4. Continental Crust • Made of granite • Older, less dense, thicker

  5. Mantle • Solid plastic-like rock • 1800 miles thick • Convection currents supply most of Earth’s internal heat

  6. Outer Core • Made of liquid metal: iron and nickel • 1400 miles thick • Creates Earth’s magnetic field

  7. Inner Core • Made of solid iron • 800 miles • Slowly cooling and getting larger

  8. Earth’s Layers

  9. Holes • Man has explored the Earth to a depth of 7.6 miles

  10. Kola Superdeep Borehole: Russia • Largest hole ever dug: scientific expedition • 12,262 meters (7.6 miles)

  11. The temperature at this depth was 180°C (356°F), at which point the rock became more like a plastic than a solid, stopping further drilling

  12. Argyle Diamond Mine: Australia • Largest hand dug hole in the world • Largest volume of diamonds produced • 600 meters (1,970 ft)

  13. Chuquicamata: Chile

  14. Udachnaya: Russia

  15. Sinkhole: Guatemala

  16. Diavik Mine: Canada

  17. Mirny Diamond Mine: Russia

  18. Great Blue Hole: Belize

  19. Dean’s Blue Hole

  20. Zacatón: Mexico

  21. Bingham Canyon Mine: Utah

  22. Monticello Dam, California

  23. Kimberly Diamond Mine: South Africa

  24. Masaya Shield Volcano: Nicaragua

  25. Darvaza:Turkmenistan
