  2. 2 Timothy 4:1-5... 1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; ...

  3. 3...but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. ~ 2 Timothy 4:1-5

Three Related Concepts • The Word, “preach the word…” (vr. 2) • Sound Doctrine, “they will not endure sound doctrine…” (vr. 3) • The Truth, “turn away their ears from the truth…” (vr. 4) • Absolute, complete and unqualified • Inalterable, unchangeable and final • Universal, well-known and available • Effectual, understandable and useful “17Sanctify themin the truth; Yourword is truth” ~ John 17:17

  5. “Doctrine” In The Scriptures • Old Testament • “The matter taught” - Deuteronomy 32:2 • “What is heard” - Isaiah 28:9b, cf. vr. 13 • “Discipline” - Jeremiah 10:8 (cf. NKJV) • New Testament • “The act of teaching” • 1 Timothy 4:13, 16; 5:17, cf. Mark 4:2

But, it is also... • “What is taught” (i.e. instruction) • Matthew 15:9 (Isaiah 29:13); • “The manner of instruction” • Matthew 7 :28, see also Acts 13:12 16So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.17 If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. ~ John 7:16-17

  7. What God Says Is Doctrine... • Is to be taught - John 6:44-45 • Is to be believed - John 5:44 (cf. 39-47) • Is to be obeyed - Luke 6:46 Yet, it must be understood, first! • By what is commanded, stated • By what is illustrated, exemplified • By what is necessarily inferred

Doctrine Covers Many SubjectsWhatever the Bible Teaches! • The nature of Deity • Father, Son, and Holy Spirit • Cosmogony (origin) (-logy, theme) • Creation, Earth/Heavenly order, Job 38:33 • Nature of man, role-based authority • Revelation and authority • Inspiration, revelation • Nature of the scripture

The scheme of redemption • Faith, Repentance and Baptism • The nature and work of the church • Collective action: Of saints, locally • Evangelism, Benevolence, and Edification • The organization of the local church • Oversight, servanthood, member relations • Moral instruction and admonition • Individual, interpersonal moral choices Because Many Subjects are Taught...

  10. 2 John 9-10 9Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
