  1. Melatonin It’s role in Seasonal Affective Disorder

  2. Melatonin • Is secreted by the _______ gland

  3. Melatonin • Is secreted by the pineal gland

  4. Melatonin • Communicates with the gland

  5. Melatonin • Communicates with the pituitary gland

  6. Melatonin • This suppresses the release of other hormones in the body • It is secreted based on (when it’s dark the pineal gland releases melatonin)

  7. Melatonin • This suppresses the release of other hormones in the body • It is secreted based on light levels (when it’s dark the pineal gland releases melatonin)

  8. Melatonin • There is a correlation between melatonin and

  9. Melatonin • There is a correlation between melatonin and Seasonal affective disorder

  10. Empirical Research: Avery and SAD Patients • What research method was used? • Experiment • Who were the participants? How many? • 95 SAD patients • What was the aim of the experiment? • To determine the effects of various light treatments on SAD patients. • What was the IV of the experiment? • The type of treatment the participants received • What was the DV of the experiment? • The consequences of the types of treatment

  11. What was the allocation method used? • Random allocation • It was a double blind study, as the Psychiatrist conducting the interviews was not aware of which group the participant was in (and the individuals would not be aware if they were in the placebo group or not).

  12. Condition One: Dawn Simulation • A light would slowly come on in the person’s bedroom, beginning at 4:30 and peaking in brightness at 6am. • Simulation means to replicate • This condition is trying to replicate what happens in months when there is more sunshine

  13. Condition Two: Bright Light Therapy • The participants were exposed to a bright light for 30 minutes, from 6am – 6:30am • This is a traditional form of therapy for patients with seasonal affective disorder

  14. Condition Three: Red Light Placebo • Participants would be exposed to a dim red light from 4:30am – 6am (same as dawn simulation). • What would be needed to happen in order for this to be a true placebo?

  15. RESULTS • Placebo Group suffered from insomnia more than the other groups • Dawn simulation group showed the greatest improvement and less side effects than the other two groups • The mean daily hours of sunshine during the week before each visit were associated with a significant increase in likelihood of both remission and response

  16. Conclusions • What does this demonstrate regarding the correlation between melatonin, light levels and Seasonal Affective Disorder?
