  2. Family • Born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • Parents are Joe and Pam Bryant. • He was the third and final child in his family. • Married Vanessa Laine on April 18, 2001, and had two daughters named Natalia Diamante Bryant and Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant.

  3. Childhood • Moved around a lot and eventually ended up moving to Italy at the age of six when his dad left the NBA and went to play professional basketball over there. • They learned to speak Italian and Spanish fluently.

  4. Continued • There was rarely a day when Kobe did not hear the dribble of a basketball against concrete during his childhood. • Took an early interest in the sport and had dreams of going directly to the NBA from high school. • By the age fourteen he could beat his dad in one-on-one.

  5. While he waited for his dreams in the NBA he settled for his high school team. He attended Lower Merion High School and played on their team called the Aces. He took the team from last to first and then to state champions the four years he was playing with them. High School

Continued… • He finished high school with excellent grades, a 1080 on the SAT, and many college offers. • At the top of his list was Duke, North Carolina, Villanova, and Michigan. • His four year points were 2,883 which shattered the Pennsylvania record set forty years before by Wilt Chamberlain.

  7. He was going to attend Duke, but when Kevin Garnett went directly from high school to the pros he started seriosly considering doing the same thing. He was chosen as the thirteenth draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996. From High School to NBA

Getting to the Lakers • Even before the draft, eighteen year old Kobe had made a lasting impression on then-Lakers general manager Jerry west. • He foresaw Kobe’s potential during the pre-draft workouts. • West proclaimed that Bryant’s workout was the best that he ever saw so in attempt to return the Lakers to championship status he traded his starting center Vlade Pivar to the Hornets for Bryant.

Kobe in the Lakers • Kobe’s first years n the Laders started off slowly, but his luck turned when Phil Jackson became coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999. • After years of steady improvement Bryant became one of the premier shooting guards in the league. • Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal formed an outstanding center-guard combination and their success gave the Lakers three consecutive NBA championship in 2000,2001, and 2002.

Highlights • Youngest player to start at an NBA game. • Youngest player to start an NBA All-star game. • Youngest player in NBA history to reach 10,000; 14,000; 15,000; and 16,000 points. • Youngest NBA All-star slam dunk champion. • Second highest scored points in a single game. • Eight time NBA All-star in 1998, 2000-2005, and 2008. • Three time NBA champion in 2000, 2001, and 2002. • NBA All-star game MVP of 2002. • NBA scoring champion of 2006.
