Math- presented by Jeff Ames • CPM Core Connections I • College Preparatory Mathematics • Textbook series that is aligned with the national Common Core Standards • Features of CPM: • Collaborative learning • Problem Based learning • Hands on learning • Individual tasks and chance for Leadership role for all students (resource manager, facilitator, reporter, task manager)

  6. Math Daily 80 Minute Block 6th Grade Math - Two sections. There will be time in class for core instruction, enrichment, and intervention. Accelerated 6th-8th Grade Math - One section. This course will cover the curriculum for 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade. - Much faster pace- two lessons per day in 80 minute period. - More complex problems on assessments . - More homework

  7. Materials • Textbook - Physical copy - E-book- username and passwords to be distributed by Week 3 - Answers online. Students should complete homework, then check answers online. The next day in class, we will review only the specific questions that students have. Students and Parents will have access to the E-book to assist with student learning. • Assessment - Individual Formative Assessment – (Quizzes) - Individual Common Assessment – Majority of Grade - Team Assessment – will count for a small portion of the overall grade, and is used to guide instruction, and prepare for the individual test.

Science- presented by Stacy Tomko Major Topics for the year: • Cellular to Multicellular • Matter • Rocks, Energy, Minerals and Soil Assessments in science: • Formatives (weekly) • Midterm Assessment • Common Assessment • Study Guides of Learning Targets • Vocabulary knowledge is necessary to answer application type questions.

Social Studies • 6th Grade Social Studies Curriculum • Five Themes of Geography • World Geography-concentration is geographic, rather than historic • Early River Civilizations • West Asia- RELIGIONS (Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism) • Africa- GOVERNMENTS • East Asia- ECONOMICS • Europe • Australia • Assessments • Formatives • Common Assessment • Projects

Achievement Tests and District Assessments – Stacy Tomko • Reading Achievement Test: April 29th • Math Achievement Test: April 30th • Please try to avoid making appointments on all assessment days. All tests dates will be posted on the Family Information System. • Common Assessments: given in all content areas; a major portion of your child’s grade. • Formative Assessments: (exit slip/entrance slip)- a type of in class “quiz” given to check each child’s understanding along the way. These provide information as to who needs intervention/enrichment. • Interims: given halfway through each grading period only for students that are receiving a C or below

  11. Homework/FIS – Michelle Bennett • Practice and extend learning • Posted on boards • Written in the agenda • Posted on website – Family Information System • Student responsibility is KEY! • Study hall is available in the cafeteria each morning from 7:45 – 8:30.

Team Discipline-Mr. Ames School Rules • Be Prompt • Be Polite • Be Prepared • Be Productive Consequences • Warning • Agenda Signed by Teacher • 3 signatures = Phone call or email home • 5 signatures = Miss Quarterly Reward Party • 8 signatures = First afterschool detention (3:30 – 4:15) • Every 3 signatures after that = detention Rewards • Good Apples • Party per grading period • Monthly Golden Apple Award • The Agenda Book will be used for Teacher/Parent Communication. Please sign each weekend for student to return on Monday.

  13. Reminders – Mrs.Tomko • Conferences this year will be a “Team Approach” on an “As Needed” basis, similar to Solon Middle School. More information will be coming on the topic of conferences. • Party sign-up sheets are located in your child’s homeroom. • Assessment Schedules for all content areas will be coming home soon. • You can always contact any of us through email. • We are going to have a fabulous year 
