  3. The Antecedents of Electronica • Its origins are in the most cerebral and esoteric music of the mid-twentieth century. • During the middle of the twentieth century, composers in Europe and the United States, using equipment as sophisticated as the first tape recorders and synthesizers. • After World War II, French composer Pierre Schaeffer began creating music using recorded sounds. • French American Composer Edgard Varèse created ‪Pòeme èlectronique, an electronic piece that mixes synthesized and concrete sounds, for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, where it played over 425 loudspeakers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7AIiTeKBUc

  4. Edgard Varèse • Born Edgar Victor AchilleCharles Varèse. • December 22, 1883 – November 6, 1965. • Was an innovative French composer who spent greater part of his career in the US. • Varese's music emphasizes timbre and rhythm. • He is known as the Father of the electronic music.

  5. Electronica Styles • House • Techno • Trance • Ambient • Jungle • Drum n Bass • Industrial dance • And many others

  6. Electronica vs Country/Rock • Among the most enduring images in twentieth century is the singer with guitar. • Now Imagine a sound that is this image’s complete opposite. • There is a little or no singing and the vocals has been filtered through an electronic device. • There is no melody with accompanying chords, instead there might be wisps of riffs or some sustained notes. • Instead of the strumming of an acoustic guitar, there is an array of electronic sounds, complete with with special effects (fx). • Instead of a single performer singing and playing while a few others listen, there is a DJ in a booth, surveying a dance floor filled with bodies moving as he mixes the music.

  7. Music for dancing, Places to dance • The dance club is the home of electronica. • The music of Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder were among the best examples of early electronica. • During the 80s two major club scenes emerged in the middle west: House music in Chicago and Techno in Detroit. • Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson dominated the Detroit scene. • By the mid-eighties the music had migrated to the UK. • The event that brought the music, the culture and the drugs up form the underground and into the public eye was the 1988 rave “Summer Love” • Rave: Is a huge dance party conducted in a large space, ecstasy and other drugs were part of the scene • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3APKbMUJh-I

  8. Ambient Music • A quite different branch of electronica, dates back to the 70s. • Includes Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. • The father of ambient music is Brian Eno, his recording Ambient I: Music for airports (1979)is a seminal. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-MG_qG5DRc

  9. ‪Brian Eno‬ • Born Brian Peter George St. John Le Baptiste de la Salle Eno. • May 15 1948, Woodbridge, England. • He studied at Colchester Institute art school in Essex, England • He has produced a large number of eclectic and ambient electronic albums such as Music for airports, The plateaux of Mirror, Day of Radiance and On Land.

  10. Hearing Electronica • Electronica has begun to appear on the pop charts, in the music of acts such as Bjork, Chemical Brothers and Moby. • The obvious difference with other musical styles is the use of recordings, rather than live musicians. • The idea of stringing together a series of songs comes from the 30s when dance orchestras and small dance combos would occasionally play a medley, a group of songs connected by musical interludes.

  11. Moby • Born Richard Melville Hall • September 11, 1965, Harlem, New York • American musician, DJ and photographer • Moby gained attention in the early 1990s with his electronic dance music work, which dabble in the and rave • With his fifth album the electronica and house influenced Play, he gained international success • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMDTgaEIi-Q

  12. Chemical Brothers • British electronic music duo, originated in Manchester • By Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons. • They started to DJ at a club in the back of a pub in 1992, under the alias The 237 turbo nutters. • They have 7 albums, Exit planet dust, Dig your own hole, Surrender, Come with us, Push the button, We are the night and Further. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpKCqp9CALQ

  13. The art of the DJ • A DJ with a two-turntable setup was able mix a series of songs into a set, as unbroken string of songs. • The art of the DJ begins with music that he or she selects. • For many reasons many DJs create their own music, it helps them develop a signature style. • Dance clubs typically have good sound systems, so producers can take advantage of the entire range of audible frequencies. • The combination of a full sonic spectrum and relentless dance beat, all in an enclosed space produces a kind o sensory inundation.

  14. Electronica and Dance music • “Nude Photo” by Rhythm is Rhythm is a good early sample of Detroit techno. • The heart of it is the beat, a bass drum-like sound on every beat, a strong backbeat and a fast moving percussion part. • Itscreatorsworkanonymously in studios. • Electronica has been the most faceless music of the last twenty five years. • Tracks like this are not telling a story, rather they are sustaining a mood. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7HiL2m63pQ

  15. Rap • 1980 - Today Ivan Herrero

This type of beat helped to give anger and frustration to the Rap. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyVeP5aov18&feature=player_embedded

  24. Public Enemy Controversy • Public Enemy lost the moral sense since Professor Griff (minister of information of the group) made anti Semitic comments, which created the separation of the group. • However, they would revive the group again, their success was for the late 80’s and early 90’s. • This group became musically relevant and amplified the impact of Rap to everybody.

  25. The Case of Gangsta Rap: Mainstreaming Rap • Gangsta Rap is a type of Rap that brought the violence of inner city into the music and out into the world. • Rappers work came from their life experiences. • “Colors” movie, shows the gangsta style of life and the stage of the two L.A. gangs.

  26. Some Gangsta rap artists are: N.V.A., Ice T, Dr. Dree, Snoop Doggy Dog, M. C. Hammer, and Tupac Shakur. • A war was created between the west and the east coast. Snoop Doggy Dog and Tupac Shakur were in prison during this time. • Pornography and misogyny was typical, so most of the releases had the “parental advisory” label. Whites wanted to enjoy this scatological music because they could know the reality of the ghetto. As a result, they were a large group of fans. • Gangsta rap included pop elements to be more commercial, from east coast to Tupac Shakur “California Love”.

  27. Tupac Shakur • He lived and died by the sword. His parents were from the Black Panthers. His mother had a conspiracy charge before he was born, and his father is still serving jail time. • His life was double tragic. Even though he was a sensitive person, he had a violent side. He was murdered because of his violence problems. • He made the 1stMainstream rap called “California Love”.

  29. Sung vocals and raps covering the sung chorus and melodic fragments lead a success. • This song defined the California life with personal remarks: jail, jewelry, clothes and street life. • This rap was more interesting then the last raps because it was imaginative, dense, and used melodic fragments with active apart form active rhythms.

  30. The Message of Rap • Gangsta rap has been the most important Rap, but the most violent too. • People thought that Rap is pure violence since Gangsta rap is the mainstream of reference. • There are pacific rap groups. For example, “The Gospel Gangstas” sends a message of peace rather than the battles between gangs. • Rap is a popular movement, there are syntheses between Salsa, Rock and Flamenco that can prove it. Nonetheless, few rap fans missed the old pure rap.
