  6. Some of the many scientific achievements • Knowledge and data management • Data integration and query reformulation in Grids (XMAP on OGSA-DQP) • Programming Models • Definition of a Grid component model (GCM) • System Architecture • P2P techniques to make Grid middleware scalable and dependable • Grid Information, Resource and Workflow monitoring service • Innovative approach to multilevel Grid checkpointing architecture • Resource Management and Scheduling • A common scheduling architecture for future Grid systems • Grid Systems, Tools and Environments • Validation of a new componentisation methodology using Grid’5000 European research network on foundations, software Infrastructures and applications for large-scale, distributed GRID and peer-to-peer technologies

  7. Before… Research in the area of Programming Models • How to ease the programming of Grids ? • Component/object • Before CoreGRID, many projects running independently: • Assist (U. Pisa / CNR) • Fractal (INRIA) • GridCCM (INRIA) • HOC-SA (U. Muenster) • Ibis (Vrije U. Amsterdam) • ICENI (IC) • MALLBA (UPC) • Mocca (Cyfronet) • Polytop (U. Passau) • POP-C++ (UASF) • ProActive (INRIA) • REFLEX (U. Chile) • QUB (Queen’s U. Belfast) • Leads to duplication of efforts, lack of critical mass and lack of visibility, … Queen’s Univ. Chile European research network on foundations, software Infrastructures and applications for large-scale, distributed GRID and peer-to-peer technologies

  8. After… Towards a common Component Model for GridsThe CoreGRID Grid Component Model (GCM) Grid Application • Establish a set of requirements for a Grid component model based on the experience of CoreGRID partners • Define specifications of what should be a component model suitable for Grid infrastructures • Not reinventing the wheel… • Implementation of the Grid Component Model through a spin-off project Resources European research network on foundations, software Infrastructures and applications for large-scale, distributed GRID and peer-to-peer technologies

  9. Main achievements after almost 4 years • Organization of 59 meetings and 17 workshops, contributing to solving research challenges as described in the CoreGRID research roadmaps. • Delivery of more than 447 joint technical papers accepted in peer-review conferences, workshops and journals, including 10 CoreGRID Series volumes, thus advancing European excellence. • Publication of 137 CoreGRID technical reports, co-authored by at least two different CoreGRID partners showing the level of integration among the CoreGRID community. • Funding of several spin-off research projects, either by the EC within FP6/7, or through national and/or regional initiatives. European research network on foundations, software Infrastructures and applications for large-scale, distributed GRID and peer-to-peer technologies

  10. Main achievements after almost 4 years • Managing the database of publications by CoreGRID researchers in the area of Grid and peer-to-peer computing with around 1050 references available today. • Increased visibility of the European Grid research community through the support of highly-reputed international conferences, such as EuroPar 2005, 2006 and 2007, HPDC 2006, IEEE conference on Grid Computing in 2006 and 2007, CCGRID 2008 and events such as Grid@Work 2006 and 2007. CoreGRID also sponsored the Open Grid Forum. • Opening up academic research agendas in order to identify business-oriented research priorities, leading to the spin-off of new CoreGRID activities, for example in service-oriented architectures and systems. • Developing new ideas to anticipate technological trends and to promote commercially relevant and promising research. European research network on foundations, software Infrastructures and applications for large-scale, distributed GRID and peer-to-peer technologies

  11. Main achievements after almost 4 years • Organisation of several scientific workshops jointly with highly reputed international conferences and the CoreGRID symposium jointly held with EuroPar 2007 and EuroPar 2008. • Organisation of four annual CoreGRID Summer Schools. • Organisation of the CoreGRID Industrial Conference. • Implementing Mobility Programmes - a Fellowship Programme and a Researcher Exchange Programme - increasing integration between partners, and now involving industrial partners. • Organisation of three annual Integration Workshops.
