  1. A Deacon Who Deaks1Timothy 3:8-13 • Deacon= servant, attendant, one who ministers to and cares for others. • 1. The Office of Deacon • Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons.

  2. 1 Timothy 3:8-13 8 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. 11In the same way, the wife/women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. 12A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Romans 16:1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, servant (deacon) of the church in Cenchreae. • The Greek word “diakonos” = deacon, is used 22 times in the New Testament with three different endings and only appears as a designated office 2 or 3 times, the other occasions it refers simply to the function of serving others. • “Doulos”=” Servant”, appears more often and underlines humility and service, but never office or position. It clearly refers to someone in submission to another. • Women clearly functioned as deacons, but were they among those that might be described as having an office as a deacon?

  4. The Service and Functions of Deacons • a) Jesussaw His purpose and ministry underlined as a deacon’s service. • Mark 10:43-45 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

  5. Luke 22:27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. • b.) Paul saw his ministry as a deacon service. • Romans 11:13: 2Corinthians 11:23 Colossians 1:25

Timothy is described as a “good minister (literally “deacon”) of Jesus Christ”1Timothy 4:6 • Acts 6:1-4 in those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

  7. 3. The Life of a Deacon. 1Timothy 3:8-13 • a) Elder-like in character • V.8 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.

  8. b) Informed and Obedient Believer • V.9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. • 1Timothy 1:5 The goal of our instruction is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. • 1Timothy 1:19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.

  9. c) He must be tested • V.10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. • d) His Wife/Women • V.11 In the same way, their wives (women) are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. • Romans 16:1 “I commend to you our sister Phoebe a servant (deacon) in the church at Cenchrea”

  10. e) Domestic Integrity • v. 12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well.

  11. 4. A Deacon’s Reward • V.13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. • Matt.25:23“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master’s happiness”
