  5. IV – How the Helper ministers to me at a deep level1) He convicts me of sin page 119 John 16:7-9 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me;

  6. What are some signs of receiving the Holy Spirit? • Jesus answers: “He will convict the world of sin” • Unless we know we are in sin, lost and condemned, there is no need to seek a savior! Romans 3:23 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Luke 13:3 Repent or Perish 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

  7. SINS • COMMISSION Things I do that I should not do. • OMISSION Things I don’t do that I should do. James 4:17 declares, "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." A sin of omission is a sin that is the result of not doing something God’s Word teaches that we should do. Romans 7:14-20. He does what he doesn’t want to do and knows is wrong—the sin of commission—and he doesn’t do what he knows he should do and really wants to do—the sin of omission. Here is a picture of the new nature in conflict with the flesh in which it dwells. (Luke 10:30-37). Jesus used this example to teach that we are to likewise help those in need. By doing so, he clearly communicated that it is sinful to avoid doing good, just as it is sinful to pursue what is evil.

  8. Some who won’t get to heaven?http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/repentence--53-sins-that-will-keep-you-out-of-heaven-nathan-foy-sermon-on-sin-general-93341.asp Romans 1:28-32 – And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only the same but also approve of those practicing them.Galatians 5:19-21 – Now the works of the flesh are evident which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, out bursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissentions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

  9. Some Sins Colossians 3:5-10 – Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth; fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness; which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 - Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionist will inherit the Kingdom of God.Ephesians 4:31 – Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice.

  10. The Biggest sin is…. Disbelief and rejection of Jesus as the Christ! “because they do not believe in me! Romans 8:2-4 …2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.… Acts 13:39Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.Romans 7:18For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

  11. Romans 5:6: For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Luke 19:90-10 Jesus and Zacchaeus…9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. 10"For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." Matthew 18:11For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.John 3:17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.1 Timothy 1:15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.

  12. According to the “world” • Belief in God is…. • Foolish • Superstition • Waste of time Pascal's Wager In the seventeenth century the mathematician Blaise Pascal formulated his infamous pragmatic argument for belief in God in Pensées. The argument runs as follows: If you erroneously believe in God, you lose nothing (assuming that death is the absolute end), whereas if you correctly believe in God, you gain everything (eternal bliss). But if you correctly disbelieve in God, you gain nothing (death ends all), whereas if you erroneously disbelieve in God, you lose everything (eternal damnation). How should you bet? Regardless of any evidence for or against the existence of God, Pascal argued that failure to accept God's existence risks losing everything with no payoff on any count.

  13. The People ConvictedActs 2:36-40 page 121 • 36“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” • 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” • 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. • 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” • 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”

  14. Acts 2:35-40Repent and be Saved 35until I make your enemies    a footstool for your feet.”’ 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”

  15. Doing what is best Just as children rebel against the knowledge and wisdom of their parents, “How blind we are to the fact that we as grownups are in an even more untenable position in relation to our heavenly Father” (Page 122) • John 3:17 • 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him We think of sin as breaking the rules – but Jesus sees the sin as us being bound!

  16. We all sinpage 122 #3 Romans 3:23 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 1 John 1:8 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. John 8:34 34Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

  17. We are captive by sin page 123 #4 Luke 4:18 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,    because he has anointed me    to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners    and recovery of sight for the blind,to set the oppressed free, Page 123: “Until we see ourselves as bound in many specific areas and in need of freeing and saving, obviously we will have no need of the Savior.” Your chains must be broken if you are to be set free and live the Christian Life as God intended. Until we believe in Jesus as our Savior, there is nothing He can do to help us!

  18. Steps to Salvation (A – B – C)(PAGE 123 #5) • A – Admit you’re a sinner • B – Believe Jesus paid the penalty • C – Confess your sins 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  19. 4.1 Helpful ReadingActs 2:14-21 Peter Addresses the Crowd 14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “‘In the last days, God says,    I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy,    your young men will see visions,    your old men will dream dreams.18 Even on my servants, both men and women,    I will pour out my Spirit in those days,    and they will prophesy.19 I will show wonders in the heavens above    and signs on the earth below,    blood and fire and billows of smoke.20 The sun will be turned to darkness    and the moon to blood    before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.21 And everyone who calls    on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  20. Notes

  21. IV – How the Helper ministers to me at a deep level2) He values my personhood page 125 2 Corinthians 3:17 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Submitting to the Holy Spirit does not negate “Free Will” The Spirit will never force you to do anything! Satan wants us bound to Sin and Jesus (The Helper) wants to set us Free

  22. Philippians 2:5-9 PAGE 126 #2 5In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God,    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;7 rather, he made himself nothing    by taking the very nature of a servant,    being made in human likeness.8 And being found in appearance as a man,    he humbled himself    by becoming obedient to death—        even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place    and gave him the name that is above every name,

  23. Free Will • We have Free Will to submit or reject the Spirit (Obey or disobey? – You Decided !) • Jesus works within us to Help others • The “Spirit” while in us, will submit to our needs – thus risking HIS reputation! • He will come to us and fill us only to the degree that we are willing to be filled! • You can receive the Spirit at Salvation – but you must cultivate His power through a relationship Mark 10:21 (page 127 #2) 21Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

  24. Obey and be blessed Luke 5:4-8 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

  25. Ephesians 4:25-32 page 128 #3 25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. 28Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

  26. Eternal Salvation or Free Willhttp://gulfcoastpastor.blogspot.com/2012/04/baptists-and-eternal-security-or-once.html Baptists are known for believing in “Eternal Security,” or, “Once Saved, Always Saved.”More humorously it has been put, “Methodists believe in falling from grace, and Baptists practice it.” Also said, “Arminians know they have it (salvation), but they’re afraid they’re going to loose it. Calvinists know they can’t loose it, but they’re afraid they don’t have it.” In my humble opinion, most Baptists have it just right. We know we are saved, and we know we can’t loose it. There are good Christian folks who believe you can lose your salvation.I believe, however, the Bible teaches eternal security or, once saved always saved, for the following reasons. Note:  First, a quick explanation. I am referring to someone who has really, truly placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Just because someone says they are saved, does not mean they are saved. The Bible teaches there are those who falsely profess to be believers (Matthew 7:21-23; 1 John 2:19). 1. Everlasting Life Cannot Be Lost. John 3:16If it can be lost, then it is not everlasting. If you have it for a year, and then lose it, it is one year life, not everlasting life.

  27. John 10:26-30Everlasting Life 26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30I and the Father are one.”

  28. Eternal Lifehttp://www.astudyofdenominations.com/denominations/baptist/ “Once Saved, Always Saved” Many Baptist groups hold to a doctrine rather similar to Calvinism’s P- Perseverance of the Saints, called “Once Saved, Always Saved” (hereafter OSAS). Essentially, many Baptists have taken the Calvinist notion of “perseverance of the saints” exclusively, omitting the rest of the TULIP belief system. The belief is that once you have been saved, no matter what you do, you will still be saved. OSAS is based on Romans 8:35-39 (discussed in Calvinism: P- Perseverance of the Saints), and verses like Acts 16:31: And they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.” Verses like these, which state that belief will lead to salvation, are used to say that salvation must come. Do the Scriptures teach this? The Scriptures do teach that we can be sure of our salvation as we walk in the light (1 John 1:7). Nevertheless, our salvation is dependent on our continued obedience to God and His Word, as He Himself has made evident in Matthew 10:22: “And ye shall be hated of all men for My name’s sake: but he that endures to the end, the same shall be saved.” The Scriptures do make it clear that we can lose our salvation, as seen in Hebrews 6:4-6 and Hebrews 10:26-31 in Calvinism: P- Perseverance of the Saints, and also in Hebrews 3:12-14 and 2 Peter 2:20-22: Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God: but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin: for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end. - See more at: http://www.astudyofdenominations.com/denominations/baptist/#sthash.s5g0LjjS.dpuf

  29. 4.2 Helpful ReadingMatthew 19:16-22The Rich and the Kingdom of God 16Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’ 20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

  30. Notes

  31. IV – How the Helper ministers to me at a deep level3) He teaches me about tears page 130Healing and Prayers Ezekiel 11:19 19I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Unburden your heart Cast all your cares upon Him 1peter 5:7 Matthew 11:28 Psalm 55:25 John 16:33 Isaiah 41:10 Matthew 6:34

  32. Don’t let your hearts become hard • Tears bring emotion – unashamed and unabashed • Jesus is a person – A dear close person Hebrews 3:7-11 Warning Against Unbelief 7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice,8     do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion,    during the time of testing in the wilderness,9 where your ancestors tested and tried me,    though for forty years they saw what I did.10 That is why I was angry with that generation;    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,    and they have not known my ways.’11 So I declared on oath in my anger,    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”

  33. Other verses about Harden Heartshttp://www.openbible.info/topics/hardened_hearts • Matthew 19:8 • Hebrews 3:7-11 • Psalm 95:58 • Ephesians 4:17. 30-32 • Mark 3:5 • Mark 8:17 • Romans 2:1-5

  34. Jesus Wept Luke 19:41-42 41As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. John 11:34-36 34“Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. 35Jesus wept. 36Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

  35. Other reasons for tears • Not of the Spirit – but of the soul or emotion • Tears of rage • Tears of joy • Tears of sorrow • Tears of frustration • Tears of self pity • Tears of pain • Tears for attention

  36. Faith Healershttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faith_healing • http://www.openbible.info/topics/faith_healing • faith healing is in reference to the belief of some Christians that God heals people through the power of the Holy Spirit, often involving the laying on of hands. It is also called supernatural healing, divine healing, and miracle healing, among other things. • In the Old Testament, Jehovah-Rapha, translated "I am the Lord your Physician" or "I am the Lord who heals you", is one of the seven redemptive names for Jehovah God. Healing in the Bible is often associated with the ministry of specific individuals including Elijah, Jesus and Paul. • Kathryn Kuhlman • Benny Hinn • Oral Roberts • Peter Popoff

  37. 4.3 Helpful Reading • Romans 12:15-16 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. • Hebrews 3:7-19 (Go back to slide 28)

  38. Notes

  39. IV – How the Helper ministers to me at a deep level4) He is my “Comforter” Page 135 • Isaiah 66:13 As a mother comforts her child,    so will I comfort you;    and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” • John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— http://www.openbible.info/topics/the_comforter

  40. http://familyshare.com/one-prayer-can-change-everything Prayer, the act of talking to God. When said alone it is heard by no one else but you and your higher power, in our case our Father in Heaven. It can be the most life altering action you may experience. Not just any prayer, but the gut-wrenching broken-hearted prayer cried with all your body and soul because there is no one else and nowhere else to turn. In those darkest moments, when we are finally ready to surrender our will for His will, we meet our God and know our own true heart. The “trouble” with the world is that this quote is backward! PRAYER should be your first line of defense or course of action – In Big and small things!

  41. Other Comforter Verses 1 Corinthians 2:9-13 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

  42. Comfort and Power in the Spirit Romans 8:1-39 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  43. Who do you call on or what do you when you are hurting? • Physical pain Vs. Emotional pain • Sympathy and Pity • “Natural Disasters” – Tornado, Earthquake, etc. • What do you lean on (provides comfort and support) – what things are outside your control? • Comfort – tenderness - mercy – compassion – (feminine) • Strength - Courage – Brave - Wisdom – Reasoning – Empowering - (Masculine) • When life gives you more than you can “stand”, then it is a really good time to get on your knees.

  44. Footprints in the Sandby Margaret Fishback Powers • One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,One belonging to me and one to my Lord. • After the last scene of my life flashed before me,I looked back at the footprints in the sand.I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. • This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,You'd walk with me all the way.But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints.I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." • He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave youNever, ever, during your trials and testingsWhen you saw only one set of footprints,It was then that I carried you.“

  45. Lost and Found • Nothing can be lost that is not owned by somebody. • For something to be “lost’ only means it has not yet been found. • The only things that are ever lost are things that have “value”. The more “value” something has, the greater the feelings of loss. • The “things” you value may not be the same things I value! Be careful when trying to provide “COMFORT” to someone who has had a loss. • There is always joy when something that was “lost” is found. (Luke 15 – Sheep – Coin – Son)

  46. James 1:2-8Trials and Temptations 2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

  47. 4.4 Helpful Reading John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 16:12-15 12“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

  48. Notes

  49. IV – How the Helper ministers to me at a deep level5) He teaches me to pray (I) page 140 Romans 8:26-27 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. If God is omnipotent and knows everything, why do we need to pry and ask? It is part of His Plan that His will be done on earth Luke 11:1 - Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus often prayed for strength and wisdom and healings
