We thought of the stereotypical conventions that are within Film Noir, and from this we began to form possible plots and Mise-en-scene ideas. Me, Oren, Will and Callum then discussed, which Film Noir films we should watch as part of our research, I chose to watch Double Indemnity, Oren chose to watch The Third Man, Will chose to watch the Maltese falcon and Callum chose to watch Chinatown. 2. Film Noir Time Line It was common for Classical Film Noir films to consist of voice over's within the films. Science-fiction films began to be produced after the Post-Classic period. Though they still contain the same theme of narrative as a classic Noir, they begin to add scientific elements within it, showing the development of film Noir. In 1990’s because of the development of Film Noir, the Femme Fatale characters also began to evolve. The era of Classic Film noir stretched from the early 40’s to early 50’s, and is also referred as the ‘Golden period’. Classic Film Noirs could have had a partial documentary style to it to gain an authentic view, it is considered that Classic Noirs were the Italian Neorealism during that period. Film Noir developed/evolved in the early 1940’s, it became well known after the war. Science fiction Noirs were recognised Early 1940’s 1980’s 2000 1960’s 1990’s 1950’s 1970’s New trends of Noir films became to emerge during the 50’s and 60’s, this is called ‘Neo-Noirs’. 1940’s-1950’s are considered as the ‘Classic Noir’ period. Within the 1990’s and 2000’s critics stated that Neo-Noir was increasing and developing from outside the Classic period. Chinatown was made in 1976, this film is still considered as a classic noir as it has the same conventions. Examples of early 40’s Classic Noir films: The Maltese Falcon (1941), Double Indemnity (1944), The Third man (1949). 3. Film Noir became to develop, different types emerged within the 60’s and 70’s, ‘Neo-Noir’ Neo-Noir emerged to had more and different interest within the Film Noir style. An example of a Neo-Noir film within the 60’s would be Cape fear (1962). The film is based on 1960’s Kiss me deadly (1955) is an example of a Classic Noir film within the 1950’s period. This film is based on a female hitch hiker, who pulls a man named Mike Hammer into a dangerous conspiracy, that revolves around something mysterious, ‘great whatsit’. The Maltese Falcon (1941) is one of the main examples to use to represent a Classic Noir film. The film is based on a detective who takes on a case where he becomes involved with three criminals and a femme fetale, to solve a case on a priceless statuette. 1950’s 1940’s

4. 1970s Chinatown (1974) is an example if a Neo-Noir film within the 70’s. The film is based on an ex LA cop, (starring Jack Nicolson) who stumbles accidently onto an investigation, a plot that consists of incest and murder with a major climax, in Chinatown. Raging bull (1980) is a good example to show the different style of Neo-Noir films to Classic film noirs. The film is based on an emotional, self-destructive boxer, who does this for a living. His rage and violence make him become the top of the ring, however destroying his own life in the process. This is different as normally the main characters are detectives. Natural born killer (1994) is also another example of the change of Film Noirs as the films aim to consist of subgenres then just one.
