  4. Conception The sperm and ovum, or egg, come together in the Fallopian Tube. The cell that is formed is now known as a zygote. The baby will be a zygote until week 2.

  6. First MonthWeeks 1-4 • By the end of the first month, the embryo (baby from week 2-8) is about the size of a sesame seed. • The neural tube is developing (brain, spine and nerves). • The heart is forming and begins to beat

  7. At 4 Weeks

  9. Two MonthsWeeks 5-9 • The embryo is about the size of a grape. • The heart has divided into right and left chambers. It is beating twice as fast as your heart. • The nose, mouth and ears are forming.

  12. Three MonthsWeeks 10-13 • By now the fetus (name of baby from 8 weeks to birth) is 2 1/2 to 3 inches long. • He has begun swallowing and kicking. • All vital organs and muscles have formed and are beginning to function. • Fingerprints are formed.

  16. Four MonthsWeeks 14-17 • Your baby is covered with a layer of thick, downy hair called lanugo. • His heartbeat can be heard clearly. • Can squint, frown, grimace, pee and suck thumb. • Forming taste buds.

  19. Five MonthsWeeks 18-22 • A protective waxy coating called vernix caseosa begins to form on baby's skin. • By the end of this month, your baby will be nearly 11 inches long and weigh almost a pound. • The five senses are each forming. • Sex can now be determined.

  22. Six MonthsWeeks 23-27 • Eyebrows and eyelids are visible. • Your baby's lungs are filled with amniotic fluid, and he has started breathing motions. • If you talk or sing, he can hear you. • 2 lbs and 12 ½ inches long

  26. Seven MonthsWeeks 28-31 • By the end of the seventh month, your baby weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and is about 14 inches long. • Body is well-formed. • Fingernails cover his fingertips. • Can see light and has 20/400 vision (can only see objects close to the face.)

  29. Eight MonthsWeeks 32-35 • Your baby is gaining about half a pound per week, and layers of fat are piling on. • He has probably turned head-down in preparation for birth. • He weighs between 4 and 6 pounds.

  32. Nine MonthsWeeks 35-40 • Your baby is a hefty 6 to 9 pounds and measures between 19 and 22 inches. • As he becomes more crowded, you may feel him move around less.
