  2. Different Sizes of Sinkholes By: Alan Gomez Photograph by Daniel LeClair How terrifying is that!? By Li Hui

  3. Introduction • I decided to do my topic on sinkholes because I think this subject is interesting. Here are some FACTS: • A sinkhole is a hole or opening in the earth’s surface that is formed due to water erosion below the surface. • Sinkholes may vary in size from very small to thousands of feet both in diameter and depth. (Harris, David) • Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly! • HUMANS can also contribute to the creation of sinkholes

  4. Taylorsville Sinkhole I was driving home from work when I saw the sinkhole. The 2 far right lanes where closed and there was crew members on site. Scary! I drive past this street everyday . By Christine McCarthy

  5. Taylorsville Sinkhole These are pictures I took of a sinkhole that happened in Taylorsville, UT on 5400 s and 3200 w. This was about a week after the sinkhole was closed. It occurred on April 26th. It was about 10-20 ft deep and 5 ft in diameter. -(McCarthy, Christine)

  6. How are sinkholes formed Form when acidic rainwater seeps down through surface soil and sediment, eventually reaching a soluble bedrock such as sandstone, chalk, salt or gypsum, or a carbonate rock such as limestone beneath. BY: MihaiAndrei

  7. Where can sinkholes be found? • Sinkholes can be found anywhere, especially Florida! • About 20 percent of the United States is susceptible to sinkhole events, but the most damage tends to occur in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. (USA.gov) BY: Brown, Dave

  8. Chicago Sinkhole • Recent news showed that a sinkhole was formed in Chicago and swallowed 3 cars. It occurred April 23rd. • I have some family that lives in Chicago close by where this occurred, they where surprised as to how much damage a sinkhole can do. • Even though they don’t occur often, they can be dangerous and be life threatening when they do happen!

  9. Blue Holes A sinkhole found in the ocean! Of the coast of Belize. 412 ft deep and 1,000 ft wide. IT is named the great blue hole and it can be seen from space. Popular for divers and snorkelers. Who knows what can be inside that hole! By: Arnold, Amanda

  10. What to look for? • The warning signs to look for are… • Gradual localized ground settlement • Doors and windows fail to close properly (St.Johns River) By Dave D'Marko, John W. Davis and Amanda Evans, Team Coverage

  11. How to prevent sinkholes • What can we do to prevent these sinkholes from forming?... • Even though there will be sinkholes created naturally we can stop others from forming if we redirect or block water, treat underground lime stones, avoid construction on wetlands, and recycling water run off. (Helicon foundation repair). Those are some ways to help avoid sinkholes.
