  1. Magnetism • Charged particles passing through magnetic fields experience a force due to that magnetic field. • The direction of the force is perpendicular to both the direction of travel and the direction of the magnetic field. • The magnitude of the force is given by: • F = B·v·q·sinθ • F is the force on the charged particle (Newtons) • B is the strength of the magnetic field (Tesla) • v is the velocity of the charged particle (m/s) • q is the charge of the particle (C) • Θ is the angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the velocity vector (degrees)

  2. Magnetism Sample Problem Problem • A particle with a charge of +8.4 μC and a speed of 45 m/s enters a uniform magnetic field whose magnitude is 0.30 T. • For each of the cases in the drawing, find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on the particle. Solution • The equation relating Force, Magnetic Field Strength, Velocity, and Charge is: • F = B·v·q·sinθ • Substituting known variables: • Part a) F= (0.30 T)(45 m/s)(8.4 x 10-6 C)(sin30o) = 5.67 x 10-5 N, out of page • Part b) F = (0.30 T)(45 m/s)(8.4 x 10-6 C)(sin90o) = 11.3 x 10-5 N, out of page • Part c) F = (0.30 T)(45 m/s)(8.4 x 10-6 C)(sin150o) = 5.67 x 10-5 N, out of page
