  1. Our Canal Walk By Leeds Class

  2. We travelled from Hamstreet to Appledore It took us 10 minutes to get there.

  3. We walked past some houses until we reached the canal We had to walk down a footpath.

  4. We looked at how the canal was made

  5. The earth from the canal was used to make a bank A ditch was dug to help keep the road dry.

  6. It is a very good habitat for wildlife

  7. The soldiers travelled along the road between the bank and the ditch.

  8. We saw lots of trees, bushes and fields. When we looked inland we saw a slope up from the Marsh

  9. When we looked towards Romney Marsh it was very flat We saw fields and some long ditches, or dykes, known as ‘wet hedges’.

  10. Can you see the dykes? They help to drain Romney Marsh.

  11. It was a very long walk.

  12. We saw some young cows who were very interested in us. As we walked we met some animals along the way.

  13. We had to be careful how we walked past them. There was one little black sheep. We met some sheep who were quite scared of us.

  14. We also saw some Mute Swans. They had a nest near the canal.

  15. This is a Marsh frog. We saw lots of them. They make a lot of noise. In the ditch at the side we found some water creatures.

  16. This is a blue damselfly.

  17. We saw lots of flowers along the canal. This is the Hawthorn tree. These are Yellow Flags or Irises.

  18. We found some strange buildings along the canal They were pillboxes left over from the WWII.

  19. There were lots of mysterious holes. We wondered what had made them.

  20. We stopped for lunch beside the canal. We found some ladybird larvae on the grass stems.

  21. After lunch we walked back towards Hamstreet

  22. We had to climb over stiles…. …and cross bridges

  23. The last part of the walk went through a Rapeseed field.

  24. We can see Hamstreet. We are nearly back.

  25. The plants were tall and very difficult to push through. But we made it!

  26. Past the allotments ….

  27. It had taken us 5 hours to walk back ! ….and back to school.
