  1. Mental Disorders An illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person. It can prevent them from leading a healthy life.

  2. Personality Disorders • Personality Party Activity Paranoid Schizoid Sociopath Borderline Schizotypal Histrionic Narcissistic Compulsive Passive-Aggressive

  3. Anxiety Disorder • A condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control.

  4. Examples of Anxiety Disorders • Phobia • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • Panic Disorder • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder • Generalized Anxiety Disorder

  5. Phobia- • a strong irrational fear of something specific. • Arachnophobia-fear of spiders • Claustrophobia-fear of being closed in • Disposophobia-fear of getting rid of things • Aka: hoarding

  6. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder- • persistent thoughts, fears, or urges that lead you to engage in repetitive behaviors.

  7. Panic Disorder • Caused by episodes of irrational fear and panic called “panic attacks.”

  8. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder • A condition that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event. • Symptoms include: flashbacks, nightmares, sleeplessness.

  9. General Anxiety • Chronic and exaggerated worry and tension even though nothing seems to provoke it; always anticipating disaster; excessive worry about health, money, family, or work.

  10. Eating Disorders • Bulimia • People with bulimia consume large amounts of food and then rid their bodies of the excess calories by purging (self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives or diuretics).

  11. Eating Disorders • Anorexia • People have a distorted sense of body image that leads to self-starvation to the point of death.

  12. Mood Disorders • An illness that involves mood extremes that interfere with everyday living. • Bipolar (manic-depressive)- involves cycles of alternating mania and depressive symptoms.

  13. Mood Disorders • Depression-when symptoms of mild depression persist to clinical depression

  14. Schizophrenia • A chronic, severe, disabling brain disorder; people hear things other people don’t hear, think people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts. People are fearful, withdrawn, and can be extremely agitated.
