  3. Four Goals of Progressivism • Protect social welfare • Promote moral improvement • Create economic reform • Foster efficiency

  4. Moral Improvement: Prohibition • Banning of alcoholic beverages • Woman’s Christian Temperance Union • WCTU • Volstead Act (1919): • 19th Amendment to the Constitution • Banning of Alcohol sales nationwide

  5. Muckrakers • Journalists who wrote about the corrupt side of business • Used their rakes to clean of the muck of the world • Politicians, Businesses

  6. Efficiency • Using experts and scientists to make society run better • Fredrick Winslow Taylor • Studied time and motion studies • Attempt to run industry faster/better • “Taylorism”

  7. Cleaning up Government • Changing how cities are run • City councils, commissions, managers • State Reform • Republican Robert La Follette (WI) • Targeted corrupt businesses • Primarily the railroad industry

  8. Labor • Protecting working children • Keating-Owen Act (1916) • Limiting the work week • Muller v. Oregon (1908) • 10 hour workday for women • Bunting v. Oregon (1917 • 10 hour workday for men

  9. Reforming Elections • Initiatives: • Citizens create bills and vote on them • Referendum: • Vote on the initiative • Recall • Removing public officials from office

  10. Women in Public Life • 19th Century: Women expected to care for home and family • Poorer women had to work • Farming in rural areas • Factory work in cities • 20% of women work • 25% of them in manufacturing • Also in education, offices, stores, bookkeepers

  11. Suffrage • Women work to gain voting rights • Many split over the 14th Amendment • Gave franchise to black men, but not any women of any race • NWSA: National Women Suffrage Assoc. • Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton • Becomes the NAWSA
