  1. Unit Two: Integers Explore Integer Addition (p.308)Add IntegersExplore Integer Subtraction (p.323)Subtract IntegersApply Integer Operations (p.347)

  2. What are integers?

  3. Think in terms of greaterand lessthan Greater than… Less than…

  4. Try it out… 1 ☐ 2 -2 ☐ 6

  5. The Number Line:

  6. Intro to Integers Mathland! Life on the Number Line

  7. Video review: What are the important new math terms mentioned in this video? Fill in the blanks on your worksheet • Number line • Positive number • Negative number • Zero • Variables (y, x, a, b, c)

  8. Create your own MathLand characters: Positives and Negatives must be different colours Positive chips + Negative Chips - Create a number line Create a short storyline(like the movie clip we watched) Act it out or film it

  9. Part II: Explore Integer Addition (p.308)

  10. Integers in the real world…

  11. MathLand: ep. 2 Adding Integers

  12. Adding Integers A couple things to remember: +1 and -1 do not represent addition and subtraction Place a (bracket) around positive and negative numbers to avoid confusion: Example: (+2) + (+1) = (+1) + (+2) = (+5) + (-4) = (-3) + (-2) = Page 310 “Explore Integer Addition”

  13. Try it out… (+3) + (+4) (-2) + (+6)

  14. 3 + 4 (-2) + 6 (-2) + (-8)

  15. Try some word problems… Sharon found $10 and then lost $4. How much did she have left? A snail slid 7cm down a stalk and climbed 5cm back up. How far was the snail from its original position? In one game, the Rockies girls soccer team scored 5 goals and had 1 goal scored against them. By how many goals did they win? Pepper, the world’s famous thoroughbred, jumped 4m three times in a row and 1m twice. How many meters did he jump in total? Juniper, the world’s most untrained thoroughbred, knocked 4 gates down in the first run and 2 gates in her second. How many gates did she knock down? Use your number line characters to complete the equations

  16. The Number Line Problems:

  17. Part III: Explore Integer Subtraction (p.308)

  18. MathLand: ep. 3 Subtracting Integers

  19. Subtracting Integers A couple things to remember: +1 and -1 do not represent addition and subtraction Place a (bracket) around positive and negative numbers to avoid confusion: Example: (+2) + (+1) = (+1) + (+2) = (+5) + (-4) = (-3) + (-2) = Page 323 “Explore Integer Addition”

  20. Try it out… (+3) - (+4) (-2) - (+6)

  21. 3 - 4 (-2) -6 (-2) -(-8)

  22. Try some word problems… On a typical October day in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the temperature is -8C in the morning and -2C in the afternoon. What is the difference in temperature from morning to noon? Sarah owed Paula $10. Sarah gave Paula $4. How much does she still owe Paula? Use a number line to complete the equations

  23. Integer Card Game:

  24. Part IV: Apply Integer Operations (p.336)

  26. How can you decide when to add and when to subtract integers?

  27. Try some word problems… One January in Calgary, a Chinook raised the temperature from -17C to 13C. What was the change in temperature? The highest paved road in BC is Highway 3 in the Kootney Pass. It has an elevation of 1774m above the Frazer River. It is 1794n above the George Massey Tunnel under the Frazer River. What is the elevation of the tunnel? The plane left Vancouver (time zone -8) at 3:00pm on a Monday. The plane flew for 11 hrs to Paris (time zone +1). At what local time did the plane arrive in Paris? Draw a picture to represent the equations

  28. Integer Card Game:

  29. Pirate’s Cove
