  2. General Instructions: • Answer on the foolscap provided. Write on one side of the page in blue or black pen. • Number and initial all foolscap pages. • Complete the attached outline before beginning. • Full, rewritten quotations must be included in the essay. • Marks will be awarded for planning, clear argument with supporting evidence, accuracy in spelling and sentence structure, and the use of three required works. • During the exam, manage your time carefully: outline (10 minutes); essay (70 minutes); editing (10 minutes).

  3. Quotation Sheet Instructions: • A one sided 8 ½ X11” quotation sheet prepared in advance of the exam is required to complete this assessment. Specific criteria are the following: • A maximum of 30 typed quotations are only from major works studied in class. • Quotations may be organized by theme and/or text title. • Quotations must be numbered (e.g., #1-30). • No commentary is allowed. • Proper MLA citations must be included only on the quotation sheet (not on the outline and not on the essay itself). • The quotation sheet must be submitted to turnitin.com and approved by your teacher by the assigned due date BEFORE the exam. DUE: Friday, June 7th Please bring a hard copy to class onJune 10th and11th

  4. Essay Instructions: • Write a formal essay in which you use ONE of the quotations from the choices below to support your argument. You must address three texts in your response: EXAMPLE CHOICES: • Choice 1:“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” – Helen Keller • Choice 2: “The most common form of despair is not being who you are.” – Soren Kierkegaard

  6. Quotation Sheet Your quotation sheet will include 30 well-chosen quotes from your three (or more) texts. How should you choose your quotes? You will be constructing your argument from an unknown prompt, however, the prompts are chosen based upon a clear thematic connection to Macbeth and Lit. Circle Novels. You can allow yourself some flexibility if you choose to include a few thematic options for your two main texts.

Influence Macbeth - 3 Quotes Gatsby - 3 Quotes Indian Camp- 3 Quotes Ambition Macbeth - 3 Quotes Gatsby - 3 Quotes When I Have Fears- 3 Quotes If organized this way, you will have the opportunity to include more thematic choices, but will need to find a way to connect your third choice without flexibility.

  14. Mistakes that were made on your in-class essays that had me saying…Really? & Urquhart

  15. Outline Your outline was an (easy)  20 marks to add on to your final product. Some students chose not to fill it in- REALLY? It’s 20 marks / 100 and I stressed the importance and ease of it several times in class. Don’t let this be you on the exam. EVERYONE should receive the full 15 marks. It’s a quick 1.5% added to your overall grade!

  16. Proof If you write an essay with no direct quotations to support your points, you will not receive a passing mark on the exam. POINTPROOFEXPLAIN! Have we not been crystal clear with this skill? If not, please tell me you need extra help. Despite the ‘really’, I want you to do well and if you still don’t understand – it’s your last chance!

  17. Points & Proofs If you choose 3 quotations that are clearly from the exact same passage to show one conversation, you have provided ONLY one point, proof and explanation- and then repeated it for 11 sentences. Your quotes should be chosen to support your analysis of the theme, character, lens…and be from different areas of the novel. I mean…REALLY?

  18. Plagiarism REALLY??!! If you plagiarize on the final exam, you will receive a zero. I want to hear your ideas, not Coles Notes’, Spark Notes’ or Wikipedia’s. Trust your ability to write a strong essay. You may surprise yourself- and me!

  19. For the exam! Your outline will require you to include the corresponding quote to the numbered quotations on your reference sheet. If you do not include 30 numbered quotations on your reference sheet, it will take me twice as long to mark your outline, with half as many marks- and then I’ll be REALLY! grumpy by the time I start your essay! 

  20. Observation vs. Analysis of the StoryPLEASE clearly understand analysis compared to plot re-telling. • P. Gatsby is very rich and powerful. • Pr : “___________” (p. 9). • E: Fitzgerald shows that Gatsby is rich with his expensive taste. There is no analysis here- only observations. P. Gatsby uses his wealth and status to oppress the lower classes. Pr : “____________” (p. 9). E: By using his status to control Nick’s behaviour, Gatsby ensures that the lower class is controlled by the opinions and manners of upper society.
