Warm Up Answer on your warm up notebook paper: The Mayflower Compact was an important step in the development of American democracy because it – • Established the principle of separation of church and state • Provided an example of colonial self government • Defined relations with local Native American Indians • Outlawed slavery in the Massachusetts Bay Colony

  2. Southern Colonies Virginia Maryland North Carolina South Carolina Georgia

  3. Maryland (economic and religious) • Place for Catholics • Planted tobacco, corn, wheat • As the plantations increased so did the need for slaves

  4. Act of Toleration • Lord Baltimore (Cecilius Calvert) presented it to protect Catholics • It made restricting the religious rights of Christians a crime • One of the first laws supporting religious tolerance in the English colonies

  5. Virginia (economic) • First English Colony– 1607 • Tobacco- cash crop

  6. North Carolina (economic) • Grew tobacco & sold tar & timber • North Carolina and South Carolina used to be one colony • Founded by a group of proprietors

  7. South Carolina (economic) • fertile farmland and a good harbor • rice was the leading cash crop • indigo – cash crop • By 1708 more than half the people living there were slaves

  8. Georgia (social) • James Oglethorpe created it for debtors and former prisoners to start over • Georgia could protect the other colonies from Spanish attack • Last English colony

  9. Geographical Characteristics -Fertile soil and warm climate - large farms (plantations)

  10. Economy • Agriculture (farming) -Cash crops: tobacco, rice, indigo

  11. B. Colonists looked for cheap labor to help them grow more crops to make more money. 1.First they tried Native Americans 2. Then they tried Indentured Servants

  12. D. When Indentured Servants had served their contracts, they would be given a pair of clothes and some food and allowed to go and make a life for themselves in the New World. They were then called freemen.

  13. LAND IN THE COLONIES A. The first people bought large plantations near the ocean…this was the best land. B. When freemen went to make their way in the world, the only land left to them was the interior- far from the coast. This land had 2 problems. 1. land not as good 2. Near unhappy native americans Were not happy Yeah and there are angry Indians

  14. II. Nathaniel Bacon A. Nathaniel Bacon was the youngest son of an English nobleman Nathan’s mother Bacon’s father Nathan Bacon

  15. B. Nathaniel Bacon came to the New World to make his own fortune How can I grow crops here ? C. When Bacon got to Virginia, the good land was taken, and Bacon had to get land in the backlands

  16. III. Bacon’s Rebellion 1676 A. The people in the backlands were suffering from many Native American attacks B. They asked the governor of Virginia for help, and he refused to do anything

  17. C. Bacon organized the freemen in the backlands and they defeated the Native Americans I have the POWER Thanks Nathan

  18. D. The angry colonists then turned on the governor of Virginia and the wealthy planters near the ocean who supported the governor E. Bacon and his followers nearly captured Jamestown and set up their own government

  19. F. BUT, Bacon got sick and suddenly died within 48 hours. G. Without Bacon’s leadership the rebellion fell apart

  20. Bacon meets Death

  21. H. The wealthy planters and the governor regained power, but they never wanted the threat from indentured servants again

  22. I. The planters of Virginia and other Southern colonies looked for a permanent , source of labor for their plantations

  23. IV. The result of Bacon’s Rebellion was that planters stopped using Indentured Servants and started importing slaves from Africa. Now Slavery will become a southern way of life.
