  2. Background • 226 million vehicles registered in the USA. • About 40% have cruise control. • Invented in 1945, basic idea is still the same. • Currently, only throttle is controlled.

  3. Problems with Cruise Control • Steep downhill slopes • Other traffic • “Highway Hypnosis” • Drivers falling asleep

  4. Complement to Cruise Control Want prototype to: • Sense objects in front of vehicle and apply brakes. • Apply brakes when vehicle exceeds requested speed. • Sound alarm and gently apply brakes if driver removes hands from wheel. • Control braking intervals according to road grade to prevent sliding on downhill slopes.

  5. Major Objectives Build a braking system that: • will enhance the safety of vehicles. • is adaptable to all vehicles. • uses currently marketed technology. • is economical. and • Develop a scaled-down and simplified prototype to demonstrate functionality.
