  3. what makes a good discussion question? • open-ended (avoid limited answers) • draws out differing opinions • encourages connections to real-life experiences • encourages higher order thinking (how? why?) • makes people interested in others’ perspectives • simple and clearly stated

  6. question 1 Nursing informatics has become a growing profession in the past decade. What do nurse informaticists do? NOT SO GOOD Limited number of responses Great for comprehension check, not discussion

  7. question 2 What are the major differences between Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP? What is Medicare? Does the government fund it completely? How is the funding for Medicaid and CHIP different from the funding for Medicare? What are the four parts of Medicare and what do they cover, in general? Most Americans pay no premiums for Part A - why? What is meant by “prospective payment system,” and what part of Medicare does it affect? NOT GOOD Rapid fire questioning! Focuses on too many topics One good “how” question

  8. question 3 There have been multiple confirmed cases of Disease X in your community. You suspect that the disease is caused by long-term consumption of a particular food item. How would you begin to collect data that would help you prove your hypothesis? How would you want to analyze this data? GOOD Connects to real-life experience Encourages higher order thinking

  9. question 4 Think of a time when you were in a hospital for your own illness or to visit a friend or family member. • How much contact did you have with nurses compared with doctors? • What types of procedures did the nurses perform, and what technology did they use?
