  2. Searching PubMed Begin with a simple search. Type pneumonia in the search line. The result is 71,869 hits; the majority being of clinical or research focus.

  3. MeSH MeSH is a foundation of MEDLINE - Medical Subject Heading - Controlled vocabulary

  4. MeSH Database Search the MeSH Database -Determine MeSH for the search term -Select subheadings -Restrict search to major topic

  5. MeSH Database Type pneumonia in search line -Review scope notes of MeSH -Click selected Medical Subject Heading

  6. MeSH Subheadings Subheadings further define the search. Of interest to Public Health Nurses: Epidemiology, Prevention & Control, Economics, Transmission. -Select Prevention & Control, Epidemiology.

  7. Restrict Search to Major Topics Only Search terms can be mentioned in numerous articles. Specify that the search is to be a major focus of the articles returned. -Check box to restrict search to be the major focus.

  8. MeSH Database Send MeSH/Subheadings to be searched in PubMed. PubMed will search multiple subheadings adding the function OR. -Send to Search Box Search in Search box is now: ("Pneumonia/epidemiology"[MAJR] OR "Pneumonia/prevention and control"[MAJR])

  9. MeSH Database Complete the search adding: AND community acquired AND vaccin* AND U.S. vaccin* is truncated and can bring up vaccinate, vaccination, vaccine, etc.

  10. Search is now: ("Pneumonia/epidemiology"[MAJR] OR "Pneumonia/prevention and control"[MAJR]) AND community acquired AND vaccin*AND U.S. - Send search to PubMed - Click button Search PubMed

  11. Limits Set Limits to further define the search Subsets -Nursing Journals Age -Middle Aged + Aged: 45+ years Publication Type -Review Article Language -English

  12. Citation Display The search results are shown in the default Summary Format display. Change the format to the Citation Display to see the article abstract and MeSH. - Click arrow and select Citation and click Display

  13. Send to Clipboard Review abstract and MeSH for the article Check box by article number to save article on the Clipboard Send article citation to Clipboard -Click Send To arrow -Select Clipboard -Click Send To

  14. Related Articles Click link for Related Articles for additional article citations. Change format display to Citation to review the abstracts and MeSH for the Related Articles. - Select articles to place in Clipboard

  15. History The History link will illustrate your searches and the search results. Bring up search results by clicking the search results link accompanying the search statement.
