  1. NanowireNanoSensors for Highly Sensitive and Selective Detection of Biological and Chemical Species Yi Cui, Qingqiao Wei, Hongkun Park, Charles M. Lieber August 17, 2001

  2. Outline • Planar Field effect Transitors • Boron-doped Silicon Nanowires (SiNws)

  3. Planar FETs • Easy to detect binding by change in conductance • Limited sensitivity and potential for integration

  4. Nanoscale FETs • Increased sensitivity- single molecule detection • Can create dense arrays • Nanotubes have limitations • Both metallic and semiconductor • Modifications of the NT surface are not develped

  5. Using Si Nanowires • Always semiconducting • Can control dopant type and concentration • Tune sensitivity • Massive knowledge of modification to the oxide surfaces

  6. Nano pH sensor

  7. What happened • At low pH –NH2 is protonated to –NH3+ • Acts like postitive gate • Depletes hole carriers • Decreases conductance • At High pH –SiOH is deprotonated to –SiO- • Increases conductance

  8. Conclusion • pH sensor is effective • Modifications of the oxide surface could be better • Can be used to detect many biological and chemical species

  9. Thank you
