Why Napoleon? -During the French Revolution, Napoleon’s great military skills won him quick promotions to general. -The Directory were weak, ineffective, and not readily supported by the French. - Napoleon and his forces defeated the Austrians and forced them to give France most of northern Italy

  3. Why Napoleon? Although successful, Napoleon could not fight off the British and decided his expertise would be better suited in France, politically -Napoleon staged a coup d’etat, or quick seizure of power against the directory

  4. Napoleon’s New Government -In 1799, Napoleon created a new constitution-in theory to establish his republic. -In reality, it was a dictatorship -The executive branch was made up of three consuls -Naturally, Napoleon was named First Consul

  5. Restoring Order -Restructured government • Replaced elected officials with men he appointed 2. Education was now under the National government’s control -This did allow for both wealthy and poor students to attend (public education) 3. Changed the financial system -Created the Bank of France -Required everyone to pay taxes **Napoleon was so loved, the popular vote, or plebiscite, voted him dictator for life in 1802
