  1. An ENT doctor is one who treats problems with the ears, nose, and throat. This is what we all know about. But, if this is only what you know about an ENT doctor, it isn’t done. There are quite a few things you need to know about ENT doctors before you consider approaching them. When to approach an ENT doctor? First and foremost, you need to know when you need to consult an ENT specialist. Generally, when we have a running nose, tonsils, or earache, we rush to the nearest general physician or our family doctor. This is because we don’t find these conditions serious enough to be brought to the notice of a specialist. But, when these conditions become severe or regular, you definitely must visit a specialist for treatment. Furthermore, when you experience ringing in your ears, hearing impairment, sinusitis, smelling sensation issues, breathing issues, and speech issues, remember that you need a specialist. What else do you need to know about an ENT doctor? ENTs use a device called the nasopharyngascope to perform in-office tests, which is a fiber-optic camera that is inserted into the nose to evaluate the nose, throat, and vocal cords. The billing of this test is not included in the office visit copy, and

  2. is often billed separately. So, you need to be aware of this as this test could be expensive. Other than physical examinations, ENTs may order CT scans and MRIs of the head and sinuses if required. The cost of these scans varies depending upon where you have them done. CT scans may vary in hundreds or thousands of rupees depending upon whether you get it done in a private facility or government facility. Even private facilities may charge you differently for the same scan. So, you need to first check for the most appropriate facility to get your scans done. ENTs prescribe lots of antibiotics for sinus and throat infections. These antibiotics could be available in generic form or have generic therapeutic alternatives. You could also be prescribed steroid nasal sprays or oral steroid pills, both of which are available generic as well. You need to be aware of all of this is you are planning to visit an ENT specialist. One more thing you must be aware of is that ENT doctors are not only restricted to diagnosing ailments and prescribing medications for them. There are specific ENT surgeons too who can perform surgery in the ear, nose, and throat, if required. In any case, if surgery is required in the head and neck area, they can also perform the same, as the head and neck are also associated with the ear, nose, and throat.
