Emerging Issues Document • Based upon fifteen 45 minute one-on-one interviews with a representative, sample of • Board members • Authority staff • Created a brief document that captures a collective perspective on • the Authority and its work, • priorities for moving forward, • key challenges over the next five years • opportunities that present the most potential. • Recommendations from community leaders and stakeholders to invite to participate in the planning • This document served as a framework for launching the strategic planning process

Community Listening Campaign Based upon the content of the Emerging Issues Document and the Board/Staff meeting • Four (4) Stakeholder Listening Sessions (10-15 participants each/1.5 hr sessions) • Chambers & Local organizations (Keep Akron Beautiful etc.) • Large Generators • Elected Officials • Waste Hauler/Processors • Two (2) Community Meetings (50 participants each/1.5 hour meetings) • Metro Parks/Cuyahoga Valley National Park • Local businesses • Faith communities • Farmers/community gardeners Listening Campaign Report RRC prepared a final report to include documentation from each Stakeholder Listening Session and each Community Meeting.

  12. Adopted Strategic Plan Vision Statement Summit County will be a “zero waste” community through leadership, education and engagement. Mission Statement The Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority provides solutions and leadership to empower our community, institutions and businesses to develop and utilize environmentally sound, cost-effective recycling and waste management strategies.

Goal # 1 Empower community stakeholders to innovate and adopt best practices to achieve zero waste OBJECTIVES: 1.1 Define and demonstrate the environmental, economic and social impact of reuse, waste reduction and recycling 1.2 Provide high quality information, programs, services and technical assistance 1.3 Utilize funding opportunities to leverage/encourage significant waste reduction, reuse and recycling strategies 1.4 Create metrics to measure success

Goal # 2 Develop partnerships and strategies to achieve zero waste Objectives: 2.1Identify and develop relationships with key community constituents to engage in collaboration opportunities 2.2 Explore the potential opportunities of having an area wide solid waste/trash collection plan 2.3 Strengthen public policy (state and local) to support the Authority’s vision

Goal # 4 Create a comprehensive plan to ensure long-term organizational sustainability OBJECTIVES: 4.1 Increase board capacity to be more reflective of the community and stakeholders 4.2 Determine adequate staff necessary to accomplish agency goals and ensure staff are well trained and fairly compensated 4.3 Develop diversified solutions for managing solid waste 4.4 Create a plan for financial stability
