Why regulate food? • Food safety is non-negotiable • Foods contain hazards which could become a risk • Physical: Dirt, sand stone, hair • Biological: bacteria, viruses, protozoa • Chemical: pesticide residues, preservatives, colourants • Quality of food • Prevention of misleading consumers • Trade of food

  4. 2. How is food regulated? • Legislation and standards drafted for safety and quality requirements • Also legislation drafted for prevention of misleading consumers • Compliance to legislation and standards by inspectors and analysts • Safety standards and legislation based on risk analysis
