  2. The Setting • Matthew 13:1-2 • 1That day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea. 2And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. The Parable of the Mustard Seed • Matthew 13:31-32 • 31He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plantsand becomes a tree,so that the birds ofthe air come and nestin its branches.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

Mark’s Version • Mark 4:30-34 • 30And He said, “How shall we picture the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we present it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil, 32yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that the birds of the air can nest under its shade.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

Luke’s Version • Luke 13:18-19 • 18So He was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.” • Daniel 4:11-12 • 11‘The tree grew large and became strong and its height reached to the sky ... 12band the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches ... www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. Lessons from the Mustard Seed • I hate to be the one to tell you this, but ... • The mustard seed is NOT the smallest of seeds ... However • The “smallest” seed becomes a tree large enough for birds to rest in • The Kingdom, from small beginnings, will grow to reach the entire world • In contrast with the passage from Daniel, this tree (the Kingdom) will last forever, unlike Nebuchadnezzar’s tree (his kingdom), which was temporary www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

The Parable of the Leaven • Matthew 13:33 • 33He spoke another parable to them,“The kingdom of heaven is likeleaven, which a woman tookand hid in three pecks of flouruntil it was all leavened.” • Luke 13:20-21 • 20And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

Lessons from the Leaven • “a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough ...” 1 Cor 5:6 • Note that the woman “hid” the leaven in the flour (60 pounds!) • What was hidden eventually became evident • The resulting bread would have fed a small village • The Kingdom is “hidden” from all but the disciples, but will grow to “feed” the world www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

Common Themes • A small start leads to a big finish • The Kingdom may start small, but will surpass all earthly kingdoms • Things occur in due time • It will take time for the Kingdom to spread • Outcomes are predictable and impossible to ignore • The final result is known in advance • Rest and sustenance • The Kingdom will supply all needs www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

Many Parables • Matthew 13:34-35 • 34All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.” • Mark 4:33-34 • 33With many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to hear it; 34and He did not speak to them without a parable; but He was explaining everything privately to His own disciples. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

The Parable of the Tares • Matthew 13:24-26 • 24Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. 26But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also.  www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. Tares (continued) • Matthew 13:27-30 • 27The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ 29But he said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’ www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
